I had read about the poor access to this hotel but I didnt quite take on board how absolute the situation is. Do not think about going here at all in a wheel chair. Expect steep stairs (some of them open treads) if you are mobility restricted. There is no alternative at all to the stairs - if you have doubts whether you can comfortably cope, look for alternative accommodation before considering this hotel. The receptionist told me that it was a listed building and they had some planning problems installing a lift - I don't apportion blame between the hotel and the authorities but, given they have a new extension and could have planned in a lift, it is an absolutely unacceptable situation, and I am surprised that it is legal.
My room was small and the bathroom cramped, but everything was clean and comfortable. There was plenty of hot water and nice towels. The TV had just the standard 5 channels, no radio. The restaurant is for some reason decorated with Roman materials, in an English country house ambience. Food was OK at dinner and breakfast, but presented with a lack of panache. Staff were very friendly and helpful, the best part of the stay.
The front of the hotel and the side overlooking McDonalds are rowdy at night.
