This is a fantastic looking hotel in a great location. The building itself is something when you first approach it, you think its going to be special. But unfortunately tardy staff and service let it down.
The rooms are good sized, and have the facilities you would expect in a 4 star, but it would help if everything worked. It doesn't.
I was on business with my colleague. I was lucky to get a room where most things worked, he wasn't and within 3 hours had changed room three times. Broken window and lack of hot water for him. I overheard others complaining about the water issue at reception.
For my part I had a maintenance visit to fit a shower screen and the maintenance staff left the bathroom in a mess, grout everywhere.
The bed wasn't at all comfortable either and the air con is very noisy, both in the room and out in the street. The higher you go the noisier it gets. The air con was also quite variable in output, especially heat.
Be aware you will also be charged for the car park, its isn't free or complementary which would impact those on leisure. Other hotels like this I have had free parking as a resident.
I've done a separate review of the restaurant (Tyrells) for an evening meal, but this was fawlty towers for dinner and at breakfast it is undersized. The buffet is nice enough, but the plates are red hot and they sometimes provide napkins to handle them and place food on them. I couldn't fault the usual selection of food, but you have to continually ask for refills of coffee and tea, rather than have a pot to yourself.
When busy there is always a large queue at reception for the two receptionists. They do occasionally send someone into the queue for authorising car park tickets, for example, but its a bit random.
The vaulted bar is OK but nothing special.
I do get the impression that some staff care, but others are just used to the hotel being "just a job"
Its a pity that the service is poor and that the hotel obviously is being run with a severe lack of attention to detail, because it has the possibility to be a great hotel.
Sorry to say I doubt I will stay here again.
