“Watch out for room 14”

Berkeley Square Hotel

I'm a big fan of this hotel and have written a review before.
But this time I encountered a problem which one or two others have mentioned as well.
For the first time at the Berkley ( and I reckon I have stayed there 3 or 4 times a year for the last 8 years) I had a noise problem.
If you are on the first floor at the front you will have a problem with music thumping up from the cafe bar beneath. When I called reception to complain ( at about 10.30pm) they said the music would continue until 1.00am!
After a complaint and a phone call to the non resident manager I was moved to a quieter room. and to fair to the hotel, they did not charge me for the night I stayed.
I think it is fundamental to a hotel that they should look after their guests first, rather than drinkers downstairs. And if you do get a noisy room you should be told beforehand and offered a discount. I'm sure that some nightowls wouldn't worry about a bar staying open until 1.00 because they would probably be in it!
But not me, I'd had a long day and was looking forward to a long meeting in the morning, I needed some sleep.

“Excellent fry-ups!”

Berkeley Square Hotel

29 Nov 2007

In general, I am not a great fan of UK hotels as I have often found them to be over-priced and under-performing. The Berkeley Square, however, is a welcome exception. Funnily enough, the place used to be the home of the Women's Institute, now converted into an ever so slightly quirky hotel.

As other contributors have already noted, there are lots of nice touches in the rooms such as a DVD and CD player and a draw full of different teas and coffee, which makes time away from home (if you are on business) a tad easier.

Breakfast is also another highlight: they can do you an excellent veggie fry-up, which is served in the hotel's comfortable dining room. Moreover, the staff serving you the most important meal of the day are super friendly. I would definitely go back.

“Amazing”

I called the hotel directly to book a room and the receptionist was so helpful, friendly and efficient. In fact before I arrived I received a phone call to check the details of my booking-excellent! I only stayed one night but I will definitely return-the hotel is truly individual-incredibly friendly, helpful and professional staff. The decor in the bar area, restaurant and lounge is very arty but relaxing and does not make you feel regimented like so many other big hotel chains do. The rooms are extremely comfortable-small but have everything you need and the little extras such as sherry, fruit, fresh teas and coffees are a lovely touch.
Will definitely return.

“Nice Hotel - Noise problem being addressed”

My wife and I stayed here one friday in March. We had requested a quiet room and were given a pleasant first floor room overlooking the quiet square. Whilst the room was a little small it was very well fitted out (CD, DVD, Bar, real coffee, comp sherry etc). The bathroom was again a little on the small side and beginning to look a bit old, but all was spotless.

The hotel is very well positioned for the University area, and packing is available in a rundown but secure local garage on a first come basis for 5 pounds / night.

The hotel lounge/bar has somewhat strange decoration, but service from all staff during our stay was efficient and friendly. Breakfast is taken in the pleasant ground floor restaurant.

As detailed by others in their reports the one problem with this hotel is the risk of music noise from the basement club which is run by the hotel. We did indeed experience this, with an EXTREME vibrating base shaking the room into the early hours. The problem was mainly from the vibration and not from the noise level of the music. Others have reported major problems with this in basement rooms, and to a lesser extent even in 2nd/3rd floor rooms.

On returning home I wrote to the hotel management along the lines of the above and received a very positive and professional response from the manager. Amongst the points he made:

1. As an immediate response we are considerably reducing the base levels of music from 11pm, as well as moving the speakers in the bar.

2. We are making significant steps to improve soundproofing.

3. We are planning to change the entire feel of the bar downstairs (basement) and replace loud music by a more relaxed piano bar that would fit in with the ambience and feel of the rest of the hotel.
....

The hotel is a pleasant alternative to the standard 'chain' hotels and is in a nice position. I look forward to staying there again once the 'noise issue solutions' have been implemented.
