My mother and I tried Maes Knoll Toby Carvery in Whitchurch at 12 noon on a weekday.
The signs outside seemed to offer a very reasonable deal - £5.75 for roast dinner.
I feel you can tell a lot from the bathrooms/toilets. They were clean and tidy, but in need of some updating. The tables were well set out, menus on tables etc. My criticism would be that the tables were a little sticky, and cutlery in need of a gentle wipe.
There were several waitresses around and 2 /3 tables of customers. Despite this we were not spoken to, and were walked past several times. I stopped a waitress and asked to be seated. Our drinks order was taken and the Carvery explained - we could go and get it ourselves when we were ready. After our meal, we waited by the till, again being walked past by several waitresses. I had to stop one to ask to pay.
The food was quite good for the money.
The choice of meat was gammon, turkey & beef. You could have all 3 if you wanted! You then help yourself to as much Veg as you want. Yorkshire pudding, Peas, carrots, swede, broccoli, cauliflower cheese, mash & roast potatoes. Beef gravy & veggie gravy with several sauces.
It was enjoyable, tasty & freshly cooked - it did what it said on the tin.
If you are expecting cordon bleu, this is not for you. If you're expecting a cheap English Carvery, give it a try!
Overall, food reasonable, service needs improve.
