It would be an understatement to call thehotel pretentious. In a vain attempt to be a chic boutique hotel they have achieved an embarrasing country bumpkin attempt at cool. Decor is all over the place and they are trying far too hard, yet despite all the effort the the corridors and public spaces have the feel of an institution. The over-eager attempts at funkiness in room decor extend to an gynaecologically detailed giant photo of the rear of suckling piglets next to the bed.

The restaurant was deserted, overpriced and again over-pretentious (duck with chocolate and rhubarb!). When my colleague asked for steak to be well done this was point blank refused as the chef "had to consider his reputation". Little wonder there were no other diners. In the bar we had the pleasure of asking for drinks which never came. When we asked a second waiter where our order was he promptly returned with the bill for the non-existent drinks.

In reality there is much about thehotel that is good if they could only get real. Some captalisation and spaces between words would also be welcome.

“Bad end to a good stay”

We stayed at the Cabury House Hotel for their annual Valentine's Ball. The hotel has a great decor but seems to lack organisation in the lounge although elsewhere the service was excellent.

We had a great night and the 3 course meal was very good.

We stayed in an executive room to which we upgraded and to be honest I am not sure if it was worth the extra money as it seemed no different to the lesser priced rooms as stated. The room however was decorated to a high standard and the bed was very comfy.

The only real let down of this hotel was the restaurant at breakfast. We were sat at a very long table which had our group at one end and some other guests at the other!! The hot breakfast was much to be desired, very greasy and not very hot, that was if you were lucky to get any as the counter was mostly empty and took ages to be replenished.

Altogether I would return here but not sure if I would stay as it was fairly expensive for what you got.

“Love it or hate it...”

Cadbury House

Syle-wise most people will either love or hate this place - a fusion of an old building housing the function rooms and a very modern extension housing the accomodation. We hated it! Inside the rooms the same fusion is evident - large gilt mirrors and repro antique chairs mixed with a 4ft modern painting of a cow's face looming over our bed.

Staff seemed to either be extremely helpful or full of attitude with no happy medium. Unfortunately, the ones who are rude or unhelpful tend to be the ones that you remember and some of the staff here should definitely be reconsidering their decision to work in a customer service based industry!

This is NOT a place to visit with children. While they don't exactly exclude them, the lack of facilities for them indicates that they are obviously not trying to encourage them. While I was able to get two interconnecting rooms, the hotel charged me £38 for a night's hire of a cot for my smallest - I can buy a travel cot for not much more than that and I have stayed in dozens of far more expensive and prestigious hotels and never been charged nearly as much for one. Silly really as it is not a fortune in the greater scheme of things but it does leave one with a sour taste.

“More like a club 18-30 hotel”

Cadbury House

Not a place to relax at the weekends.

After a very cold welcome from one of the reception staff we arrived at our room where we soon discovered that the bed had not been made properly, these were promptly addressed when we contacted the reception. Additionally, there was paint crumbling off the fittings in the bathroom and no wireless Internet or bottled water despite being an “executive” room. On the Friday we found dirty bed linen left on the floor in our room after housekeeping had cleaned the room. A very uncomfortable and noisy bed.

Aside from these little annoyances, the frustrating part of our stay was our last night. We had decided to have an early night ready for our early departure the next day. However, we soon discovered that this was not going to be possible as our room was immediately above the disco which was very loud and went on until late. This was then followed by revellers making a lot of noise in the corridor, including blowing party whistles and a mistaken attempt to get into our room, each occurring at various intervals until around 5am. I alerted the reception but of course there was nothing they could do.

After only a few hours sleep we left very disappointed after a disappointing breakfast with no fresh fruit available.

Of course the behaviour of the other guests is out of their control however, locating rooms immediately adjacent to a late night disco is short sighted and not fitting to a “luxury spa hotel”.

I found staying at the hotel more like stumbling into a club 18-30 apartment rather than the 4 star luxury it claims to be. At £160 per night I would expect the hotel to notify us that the room is adjacent to a night-club.

Aside from these misgivings we enjoyed the health club, the wedding arrangements were great and aside from the girl who checked us in we found the staff friendly and helpful although obviously some management teething problems.

So if you plan to visit at the weekend either gate crash the party or insist on a room on the top floor.

As a professional meeting planner I stayed in this hotel, on business, for one night in September. The hotel is very clean, modern and funky. I had a good size room with an area to work and sofa. Room service was very quick and the location and views are great. The only negative comment would be that the receptionist supervisor on the front desk could do with losing a little of the attitude and be more customer focused/friendly - she forgot to book my alarm call so thank goodness I was not relying on that solely, otherwise I would have missed a crucial client meeting; she was also reluctant to assist with removing a staple out of a photocopy so as not to damage her nails and the hotel were not very flexible with a late check-out of only an hour later. Other than that I would definately stay again, it is a fabulous venue. In-room: fast speed internet, tea and coffee facilities, ironing and ironing board, toiletries.
