I've lived in Cambridge and also stayed at this hotel many a times and sadly it's sliding the wrong way
Location: this has always been the strongest point of the hotel - smack in the middle of the whatever you need in Cambridge - the colleges, the restaurants, the bus station etc
Lobby/Service: Its a clumsy lobby where you have to take the escalator up a flight to check in. For as long as I remember, they always have construction there making for a mess. In perhaps 10 stays, its been a rare occasion when I could comment on the friendliness/helpfulness of the staff. Too much of a "taking it for granted that we are a good located hotel etc etc..."
Rooms/Elevator: Dated is the best I can add. The bathrooms need revival; the mattresses need a (desperate revival), and the air-conditioning needs a kick. One handles an off room once in a while though my experiences there seem to be stuck at off :-( Slow & noisy elevators. Only the rooms overlooking the entrance have some kind of views, most rooms are boxes
Food: disappointingly expensive. Far easier to walk down 50 yards where a slew of bakeries & restaurants offer better value.
Wifi: expensive and trips. Very often the hotel advertises packages for both Wifi and breakfast - go for those. Else walk down to the main street where there are plenty of free WiFi's - close to the Subway (off street going to bus station) seemed to have plenty of decent strength Wifi's
Summary: Generally pricey but the cost is not reflecting value. I've taken Hotel du Vin and the Hilton Garden hotel and liked both better.
