“Very Average”

Carolina Guest House

If you are looking for a B&B with atmosphere/charm then this is not for you. It is 2 semi detached houses combined together to give a number of bedrooms with Breakfast served in the dining room of one of the houses. It is on the cambridge inner ring road appx 2.5 miles from the centre. It is a fairly nondescript area and I feel for visitors from the US etc if they think they are getting a good old fashioned English B&B. The breakfast is ok but pretty greasy and cheap packet bacon/budget sausage. Rooms are pretty small but clean and tidy. No sound proofing so you take your luck really. Scruffy gardens at back. Price saves it really. Good base to lie your head and get out into town. It is near a bus stop which is good although Sunday service is less frequent. I was suprised how highly this had been rated. Perhaps it is because the hotels in the city centre are more expensive.

“Great Disappointment”

We were quite disappointed with our experience at the Carolina Guest House. We booked our stay after reading all of the positive reviews about the accommodations and hospitality. We were disappointed with both. The rooms were small and the beds were uncomfortable. I can only assume that in an effort to make our room "ensuite" the owners built a bathroom in a small closet. The sink was tiny, and the shower stall was so small one had to open the door to dry off after the shower. Rather than the small individual soaps and shampoo offered by every other B&B, this guest house had large multiuse bottles (only 1/4 full). There was a TV in each room (we had two rooms), however, there were only 3 channels. Our host, Pas, was pleasant, but not really helpful. When asked questions, most of the answers were simple yes or no with no elaboration. Breakfast was also a disappointment. Full English part was adequate, but the continental breakfast consisted of white loaf bread (sometimes even a loaf of wheat bread), pastries and croissants in cellophane (that is, from a box), and spotted bananas and little apples. The fruit at the market was much fresher. In fact we often bought fresh fruit at the market and brought our own to breakfast. The house was on the bus route, but the buses only run once every hour on Sundays and after 7pm. The walk into town was truly a hike (30 to 40 minutes). I am sure there are better accommodations in Cambridge.

We normally accept all constructive criticism but not when we feel the guests are being unfair . I would like to explain to Mr S. that our breakfasts are quite adequate for most people, apart from bananas, apples and the sealed croissants and pastries( we choose sealed for hygiene reasons), we had fruit salad, yogurts , cheeses and rye bread in the fridge in the dining room ( maybe he missed them). As far as room sizes are concerned, one of the rooms maybe a bit small for some people, but he should also mention the other room he had, where there is also a two seater sofa for guest to relax and where he had a full size bathroom, with a bath and a full size basin. We replace the big bottles of shampoo when they run out.
We have replaced tvs with 22inch LCD screen with digital freeview channels.
Regarding the beds, we bought the beds in june 2008, they are very new and everyone is telling us how comfortable they slept. Maybe he was disappointed because we could not collect his clothes from the laundrette as he asked us, unfortuately we had guests arrivng, we could not leave the premises.
We think this guest has mistaken B&Bs with hotels.

Pas was very gracious and helpful. It was an easy hike to city center. The bus was quick and the return station was identified by a very helpful bus driver(station C bus 2). Breakfast was great, the room very clean and comfortable. We will stay with Pas again on our next trip to Cambridge.

“Gluten free accomodating”

Carolina Guest House

22 Mar 2008

Arrived in the early a.m. hours after series of flight delays into Stansted. We called to tell them that we would be very late & they made arrangements for us to be able to get in. The beds were comfortable. The place was clean. Very much like visiting family in some ways. They even made arrangements to have breakfast a little later so that we could sleep in a bit after arriving so late.
They also helped us arrange our travel arrangements for the week (we got into Stansted so late almost everything was close - we barely made the last bus to Cambridge).
They were wonderful.
* We let them know in advance about my allergies & they also had gluten free toast available to me.
Absolutely wonderful experience.
