Just spent two nights in Helen's charming Bed & Breakfast. We were visiting Cambridge and it's colleges and as usual I searched around on Tripadvisor first and chose this accomodation due to the excellent reviews. We were definitely not disappointed.
The whole house was totally renovated litterally from ruins so as you can imagine, it now has all modern facilities and is particularly comfortable. The shower room in the first floor bedroom that we shared as a triple was just to my taste. Modern, efficient and attractive ("why isn't my bathroom like this at home?" I said to myself) Quality toiletteries were also offered (remember this is "just" a bed and breakfast not a 4 star hotel) and the beds, linen and towels were also extremely comfortable.
As mentioned by others, breakfast is taken downstairs in a light and airy room looking out onto the very English garden. Nothing short of delicious. A great way to start the day.
Helen really is the perfect hostess. Very forthcoming but at the same time discrete with a bubbly friendly approach right from the start. I agree with other comments made, after just one stay, you come away with the feeling that you've known her for ages. It's not always easy staying in other peoples homes but there's none of this awkwardness here. Helen has lived abroad for many years and this definitely shows in her openess.
We ate lunch at the neighbouring pub The Admiral Vernon but I wouldn't recommend this place which is rather run down (my fault really as we turned up unannounced and too early for the B&B) Helen can recommend a short list of welcoming and attractive pubs in the area such as The Duke of Wellington in the neighbouring village for some excellent English food (yes people, the English do have excellent food!)
Travel to and from Cambridge is easy with the Park & Ride system (a 5 minutes drive away from the B&B) and the rather unusual "guided buses" that whisk you into town in no time. The fare system is not that easy to work out at the car park however so be prepared to scratch your head a little here (or preferably get the info beforehand)
Two elements that do not appear to have been pointed out concerning the B&B and which I believe are important. First, there is a private car park, so your car doesn't stay in the street at night (for nuts like me who treat their car like a member of the family!) and second, you have a private access to your accomodation with a seperate door on the ground floor level (you have a set of keys) It's pretty much equivalent to having an appartment rather than just a room in someone's house. So basically you can come and go as you please without worrying about bothing your hosts as you dont actually go through any of their private living area. Personally, I think that this is a major advantage and convenience.
So thank you Helen for making our stay so pleasant. I hope that my comments will encourage others to come and stay with you and wish you all the best with your next "adventure". I will be watching your website!!
