Having rang a few hotels already in Newquay we had been informed that many were currently undergoing refurbishment so this was one of the 1st questions we asked Zoe at Sunnyside Hotel, only to be informed that none were being carried out and it was "nice and quiet". When we arrived we found out that next door (where an adjourning hotel was previously) was large scaffolding supporting Sunnyside and a large construction site (includings cranes, concrete mixers etc.) in its place - we were woken up at 7am most mornings by lorries delivering / collecting at the site. Word of advice - this looks like an ongoing project for several months at least so take this into consideration before booking!
Sunnyside Hotel was £20pppn which didn't include breakfast - rooms were basically furnished and clean. We had very little hot water for the first day or so but improved by the 3rd day. Our room had large damp patch on ceiling and wall and was generally in need of some modernisation. Excellent views as we were overlooking the sea and Sunnyside hotel was ideally located on side street in main Newquay centre, close to all ammenaties. Most bars open but nightclubs and food outlets were mostly closed. Sunnyside also has it's own bar but it was not open during our duration. Lights in corridors kept being switched off so was pitch black when returning in early evening and had to fumble on the walls to find all the switches, which considering they had several steps leading up or down on most floors it was a bit of a safety hazard. Staff overall were friendly and helpful and tea and coffee were topped up daily.
Overall review is that hotel is ideally located and rooms are clean but in need of refurbishment. Would strongly recommend that you enquire about building next door if considering stopping here during the summer of 2008 as there is a lot of noise coming from the construction site.
