Having decided in a two night trip down to Newquay, my partner & I were very much looking forward to our stay. I trawled the Internet for a good deal & read almost every review there was - which for this hotel are surprisingly generous! After a 6 hour drive my excitement quickly turned to disappoinment!
Check in was quick & easy (though you have to pay upfront on arrival) and on the whole the reception staff were very helpful! But that's about the extent of the 'positives' on this stay! Our first room was simply unacceptable. Very shabby, outdated, old fashioned & a mis match of dirty fixtures & fittings! A fixed shower head extending to about 5ft 5 meant my partner would have had great difficulty showering! But all of this I could just about put up with through gritted teeth. But the distinct smell that filled the room I could not - damp!
After complaining to reception we was 'upgraded' to a sea view room but were told that the bed was a 'little' smaller. Well - if this was an upgrade then I was totally shocked! The only nicety about it was the sea view but with unopenable balcony doors it really couldn't be enjoyed. The bed was a cross between a single & a double, plaster was peeling off the Walls & the curtains didn't meet when pulled! But the real shocker was that first night when I woke up with chattering teeth! I was absolutely frozen! To my dismay the heating had been switched off so I had no choice but to 'layer up!'
I expressed my concerns to reception the next day & was informed that the heating was turned off at around 10pm every night dependent on what 'BBC weather said!' quite frankly i didn't care what BBC weather said & was speechless that in hotel accompdatiom guests have no control over the temperature of their rooms! The solution - an electric heater was placed in my room.
Breakfast was mediocre but to be honest by the start of the 2nd day I'd had enough & just couldn't wait to check out. This is by far the worst hotel I have ever resided at and can honestly say that many other reviews are overly generous on their ratingings!
My stay at the Victoria hotel totally ruined my trip away & I just wished I'd clicked past it when I'd initially booked. A total waste of money.
