“Worth a visit”

Watergate Bay Hotel

12 Jul 2008

All in all this is a great hotel.
Great location, good stylish chic rooms. Lots of nice attentions to detail; Ipod dock in the room, balcony view of sea etc.
Right by the sea and attached to the Surf Academy/ Jamie Olivers Fifteen restaurant etc
Has a relaxed feel to it. Staff all kitted out in "White Stuff" clothes as uniforms; looks good.
Ate in the Brasserie one night and the food was well priced and beautifully cooked/ presented.

Bar is pricey and doesn't cope that well with lots of punters in one go. Likewise the overall chilled atmosphere and belief that everyone will be so happy there means the front of house staff don't always appear equipped with the skills to deal with the unhappy guest.

Tends to cater for the more well heeled individuals and if this is you: go for it. Very close to Newquay airport so can get down from London quickly. However, more of a London by the sea than a taste of true Cornwall.

i have now stayed here twice . once was an wedding anniversary
which was an amazing weekend in june great food great staff great design great beach. we followed this a year later and took the kids and had a family suite again all great but the family suite had no view and cost twice as much as the ocean veiw double the year before. so its worth paying the extra to have the view.

Loved the stay here, the whole room was lovely and the view and balcony outside was great. Parking was easy and very close to the hotel. The staff were a little unfriendly on arrival but just ignored this. Breakfast buffet the next day was superb..with everything you could possibly want and more all included in the price we paid.

A good stay but once was enough to go. I would recommend for anyone wishing to surf or be beside the beach but for anything else I'd go elsewhere next time.

“Dirty Coach House Accomodation Disappointing”

My husband and I have reflected on this review for a week, and time has probably mellowed our comments!
Booked the coach house accomodation directly for one night to visit Jamie Oliver's Fifteen. If we had not booked the restaurant ( which was lovely) we would have left the hotel .Major problem with lack of car parking spaces caused us and other guests some angst. Although the staff were welcoming and I loved their uniforms we were disappointed that the accomodation booked ( we know it's basic) was dirty. We were in a family suite in the coach house. The bathroom cushionfloor was rucked, stained black from wetsuits and not sealed. There was mould around the shower screen and there were urine stains clearly visible underneath the loose toilet seat. A previous guest's shower gel was wedged behind the pipes of the sink. The mirror on the bathroom wall was full of screw holes. Yuck.
Luckily the communal areas were clean and well decorated.
The furniture and bedding in our room was beyond basic so that it looked junk-shop standard.Even the excellent breakfast could not overcome our overwhelming disappointment. We assume that stag parties usually stay in this accomodation( indeed such a group in fancy dress was in the hotel and whilst they were well behaved this does not fit the image the hotel is trying to sell). However at over £50 pppn b and b, a hotel of this calibre should be able to clean a bathroom and not leave loose toilet seats for any guests. Very disappointed and we would not return. Check in was good but the chap who checked me out did not even bother to ask how our stay was. Need we say more.

“Food, food and more food (and stunning location too!)”

We booked this hotel with Travel Zoo, a gourmet break with all meals included, including one at Jamie Oliver's 15 which is a short walk across a car park from the hotel. What has always put us off from going to Cornwall is the sheer distance and it is a bloomin' long way but once you get there it is shoes off and race to the bar to get a drink and sit outside on the balcony. We had paid extra and had a balcony and sea view with our room and as we were lucky with the weather it was good to sit outside with a book and drink and enjoy the surroundings.
Having gone for the food I guess I should mention it, the meal at the Brasserie was excellent, at 15 sublime, and at The Beach Hut chilled out and relaxing. The breakfast buffet was pretty special as well, i can heartily recommend the waffles. As for the hotel, it had a couple of (small) pools and a therapy/beauty area, neither of which we used. It was in a great location for coastal walking, getting in your car to explore the area, or if you fancy going down to the beach for a surf.
All in all a cracking stay, only a few small gripes being the poor layout of the bathroom which made it awkward getting in and out of, the balcony would have benefitted from having a small table, and some of the walls were badly scuffed which I wouldn't have expected. Aside from that, friendly helpful staff, clean hotel and great food, now if only we can face the drive back down there again, we'll be back!
