“A disappointment”

Churston Court Inn

Save Review
2 of 5 stars
Oxford, United Kingdom
7 Jul 2008

Although Churston Court looks great with its olde world charm, and theatrical decor, it was overall disappointing.

The main areas of concern were cleanliness and attention to getting the basics right. We booked a 'superior' room (James 1st) for a two night weekend stay at £90 per night.

The room had a great 4 poster bed but was very, very small. Fortunately you could store bags etc under the bed because there was literally nowhere else! The decor is good for the type of hotel but our bedspread was dirty (very suspicious stains!) and there was a strong smell of drains for the duration of our stay.

On the plus side in the room, the bathroom was great. It was a good size with a nice bath and seperate large shower and had clearly recently been updated. The pillows were also very comfy, unlike the mattress.

There was a wedding celebration on Saturday night so it was very noisy until 11pm. It was however very poor to go down to breakfast the next morning to discover that they had not cleaned between the wedding and serving breakfast. Our table had been set for breakfast without even being wiped so we had wedding cake crumbs, icing and currants as well as confetti on our table and the floor had the previous night's dirty paper napkins and other litter.

This is a shame as these basics detracted from a decent breakfast with good choices.

The Churston Court Inn looks great, has real atmosphere, but was ultimately a bit of a let down.

“Fantastic find...”

This place was a last minute escape for a couple of nights - we booked on laterooms.com and had read reviews on here....a little nervous, but for the price, worth the risk...all I can say is...
WHAT A FANTASTIC PLACE.
It is steeped in the most brilliant histroy, was so exciting to walk around - paintings, armour, tapestry, huge candle abras every where - really different.
Our room was perfect - the most comfty, huge four poster with a really clean modern bathroom - you cannot knock it.
I have read on here someone moaning about 'old' (yes - how about 13th century! Grade 1 listed!!??) Strange Smell - yes, sometimes, in some parts - but its really really old, the decor and fabrics were in perfect condition - even new carpets...its just ludicrous to read so many nicky picky things - yes, we could write some bad things if we tried...but I would be scraping the barrell...ITS GREAT..... Its not a five star Von Essen, but you dont pay for that either!!!!

“Lovely weekend”

Churston Court Inn

12 May 2008

Booked dinner, bed and breakfast for 1 night as celebration and thought olde worlde hotel with four poster bed would be fun.
Bathroom was newly refurbished with roller top bath, but difficult to bath in due to taps being in middle of bath and attached to wall. Nowhere to put soap or bath gel apart from floor. Lighting poor, 1 single 20watt bulb in middle of ceiling and no natural light. Bed was huge and very comfortable but bed ends high and sharp - have a massive bruise on thigh as proof.
Fixed menu for dinner choice - option to pay extra that made it an expensive meal, on reflection should have booked b&b and paid for dinner. Food was well presented and good quality. Dining room had unnecessary muzak that spoiled atmosphere.
Breakfast in a dark poky room inspite of beautiful sunshine outside. Staff friendly.

“Had a wonderful Break”

Churston Court Inn

25 Feb 2008

We went to this lovely Inn for my birthday for two nights. As soon as we got there we learnt that we were upgraded to a lovely four poster bedroom, as there was one empty. The rooms are wonderful, and the bathroom was out of this world. The bed was so big and so comfortable, and decor in keeping.
The breakfast was large enough to keep you going until Dinner and the Dinners were very good esp. the carvery.
The staff were all so lovely and couldn't do enough for you, esp Chelsea.
Would go back again anytime, had a great stay. Not for people who like a lot of nightlife and shops ect. But the very place for a quiet, romantic weekend away.

“worth every penny”

Churston Court Inn

14 Feb 2008

My husband and i have just returned from a 2 day break at the churston court inn hotel nr brixham. The hotel was wonderful, completely different than what we usually stay in. The decoration was very over the top but in total character with the property. We found all the staff most helpful and nothing was to much trouble. We had a superior room which had a huge four poster bed in it. The bathroom looked as though it had just been revamped, although it was small the decoration made up for it. The accommodation was spotlesly clean. We ate in the restaurant in the evening and could not fault it. Although it says continental breakfast on its write up we did have a full english. The only criticism i have and it is a small one, and that is the lighting could have been a little brighter in the restaurant and the rooms. Apart from that i would definately go there again with out question.
