“One of the better HI Express Hotels”

Holiday Inn Express Exeter

2 Jul 2008

We stayed here for one night on our way down to Cornwall. The hotel was easily accessible from the M5 with plenty of parking. Room was clean and functional and bed was comfortable. Nice large shower mainly because there was no bath which suited me because I prefer showers anyway! Downsides to the room were the noise from airplanes from nearby Exeter Airport and we couldn’t work out how to adjust the temperature for the room – it was either really cold from the air con or had to be completely switched off for a warm room. Breakfast was nothing special – no semi skimmed milk available, standard choice for continental breakfast and it was hard to get a table because it was so busy. Felt a bit like a school canteen. The choice of teas was very good though. This is a great place for a one night stopover on your way to other places or if you need a hotel with good transport links. Exeter town centre is nearby as well with some nice restaurants.

If you want to visit the Met Office in Exeter, great, as the hotel is next door, on the outskirts in an otherwise non descript and quite difficult to find side road beside an industrial estate. However, there's plenty of parking, the rooms are well sized and it's cheap. There's giant screen football in the bar, discounted Bulmer's cider and a self service breakfast which exceeded my wife's low expectations for the Express by Holiday Inn concept (yes, it does have yoghurt, muesli and orange juice and yes the toaster has a sign telling you not to touch the setting dial, even though each slice of toast was burnt). The staff are helpful, articulate and seemed interested in their jobs. There's a pub next door for evening meals and I even saw a wild rabbit grazing the grass outside.

  • This TripAdvisor Member:
    • Liked — Value for money, modern and clean
    • Disliked — Functional and lacking soul - it's a cookie cutter hotel in a light industrial park without character

“Clean excellent value but ... beware privacy !”

Stayed five nights for a business course. The property seems to specialise in this trade - particularly related to the aviation industry.

My room was well equipped clean cool modern with effective air conditioning. I was particularly pleased with the bathroom.

The only gripe I would have is the almost complete lack of sound insulation between rooms. If your neighbours have an active libido, flatulence or are simply having a bad day - you will know about it ! Every single word every single movement.

Breakfast is simple continental. The bar is a little sparse and expensive. The Barn Owl pub is opposite and does good meals and at least has some atmosphere.

Overall, good value for money many full service hotels could (and should) offer accomodation this good. Do not expect privacy ... especially if you fall into the "romantic getaway" category.

I stayed for one night. The room was a little noisy as it's just off the M5 I guess that's to be expected. The aircon was rather annoying and loud. It woke me up several times in the night when it "kicked in". On a positive note it was a clean room. I had a double with sofa bed which I used as a sofa when watching TV. The ensuite had a nice large shower cubicle and good sized mirror. I liked the full length mirror in the bedroom. There was liquid soap and shower gel/shampoo in the bathroom but no other toilettries - no shower cap. You could ask for a few complimentary items if you'd forgotten anything essential - however I didn't need to. The TV reception was good although the selection of channels was rather limited. Tea and coffee making faciilities but no biscuits or hot chocolate. Breakfast was adequate, toast, croissants, some fruit, cereals, fruit juice and tea and coffee. I didn't find this a scrum like others have said but I didn't go to breakfast until 8 am so maybe it's worse earlier. I felt the price was a little steep, at first I got it as £89.95 but when I managed to get the leisure saver rate online this dropped to £79.95. I was visiting the Met Office which is right next door so for this price the location is better than somewhere in town (similar prices in town). I think you can get rooms for £39 but I suppose you need to book these in advance. My booking was rather last minute! A taxi to Exeter St David's is about £10. The park and ride bus which is just over the road is £1.85 adult single fare.

“geat value”

Holiday Inn Express Exeter

26 Mar 2008

Stayed here on business for 2 nights. The check in was done quickly, as the hotel is very busy. Room was a twin and beds were very comfortable.

The pub opposite was very nice and the food was excellent.

This is a busy hotel ( it is the closet hotel to exeter airport) and is used by the flight crews and travellers alike. breakfast is a little bit of a mad house, but fresh.

Good value for money....the only downside is the car park. no mistake is is massive, however this hotel seens to access at full capacity every night, parking my be at a premium. I got there about 6.15 on the 1st night and got the last place!
