“Should be Better and Beware Hotel Parties!”

Abode Exeter

13 Jul 2008

On balance we enjoyed our stay-- but with a bit more care and attention (and more than anything proper management) it could and should be so much better.

The Good:
Location in the heart of the town and ideal for a walk before/after dinner
The food in the main restaurant was good and fresh (especially the fish)- if over salty

The Average:
The young staff did ok, especially in the restaurant and reception
The room, 117, had the 'boutique makeover' not a great one but ok

The Bad:
A private party was booked with live music in the hotel function room which bellowed out LOUDLY until 12:30am-- obviously we didnt know when we booked it, not acceptable
The room wasnt the cleanest, especially the bathroom
The room was small and backed onto the hotel aircon units
No sign of hotel management actually providing leadership- some staff seemed more interested in their social life

Would we go back: No, too many issues for the money- and I really couldnt take another late night party at my expense!

“Very friendly overpriced disorganised hotel.”

This hotel has pretensions which it does not realise. The food is adequate and sometimes good. The staff seem very friendly, overwhelmed, disorganised and polite.

Having stayed there for 2 weeks in July 2008 I would neither stay there again or recommend it to anyone for business or leisure. It is too expensive to forgive its faults. Incorrect information was given to me about pricing and room availability.

The rooms are clean, and either small and expensive or medium sized and very expensive. The facilities would be adequate if they worked which sadly for me they did not.

Stayed at the Abode while visiting the university open day with our daughter. booked two rooms one desirable and one comfortable. Travelled by train because of fuel strikes. Taxis easily available from the station. check in efficient. lift out of order so had to lug baggage up three floors. room looked fine, a little compact. Stripped wood floor (sloping) so suitcase rolled if not against a wall. Very comfortable queen bed and the most fantastic view of exeter cathedral. Did not seem to be much difference between our desirable room and our daughters comfortable room except for the view - she did not have one! Tea and coffee available in the room everything adequate. great location with real cafe culture feel as the hotel owns the cafe next door and the pub on the other side. A very old hotel dating back to the 1700s so uneven floors and creaking stairs part of the character. Ate in the restaurant for dinner which was excellent and the usual price for a tasting menu. Breakfast service was also excellent as was the quality of the hot food cooked to order. Great location for shopping/sightseeing. If i was in Exeter again I would definitely return to this hotel. Our rates of £115 and £135 including breakfast compared favourably with other hotels in the category.

“Not as Fabulous as it should have been!”

Abode Exeter

3 Jun 2008

Booked a Fabulous room as it was one night away without our 3 year old. It was a spacious room but I did feel that for the price it was left standing by the quality regularly turned out by your Hotel Du Vins or Malmaisons.

No mini bar. Bathroom fixtures and fittings fairly amature.

On the plus side - a lovely position directly opposite the cathedral, an extremely comfortable bed and a much needed nights sleep!!!

“Nice - but one hellva noisy night!”

Abode Exeter

1 Jun 2008

Overall a fun place to stay with slick looking rooms and a good restaurant with very friendly, if slightly slow service, but can't forget the sleepless night we had here. Our room was on the first floor situated over a noisy pub/bar and as the drinking increased so did the decibels. When the bar shut - the revellers hung around on Cathedral Green before finally calling it a day. Dozed off then only to be woken by the bang-bang-banging of dustbin lids and more drunken shouting an hour or so later. Shuffed cotton wool in my ears - but still could hear the dustbin lorry taking away the empty bottles at some ungodly hour in the morning. Bleary eyed the next day!
