“Damp and mouldy”

The Barton Cross Hotel

29 Feb 2008

Oh dear. I used this hotel as an overnight stop whilst on business in Exeter. The front man was very welcoming and friendly but the hotel rooms are in dire need of refurbishment. I had a ground floor room which was spacious but on entering it smelt damp and the radiator was put on immediately. The bed was uncomfortable and felt cheap. The decor was from the 70's. The bathroom was spacious with a bath and overhead shower (if you could call it that). The bath taps had black mould around them and it felt dirty.

The only real plus point was the breakfast.

“Superb food”

Barton Cross is a lovely hotel; a thatched property set in the Devon countryside.

It is worth staying at the Barton Cross for the food alone; the food is exquisite, with a good range and a couple of daily specials. The portions are just right to allow for real enjoyment of the flavours, without feeling too stuffed.

The service across the board is friendly and personal.

The rooms are large, clean and functional, but I did not stay long enough to get the full use, so can't really comment further.

There are no leisure facilities in the hotel, but there is a good leisure centre 10 minutes drive down the road. This is vital information, as any prolonged stay would result in putting on a few pounds without taking some serious exercise before tucking into the gorgeous food.

My only real criticism is that the walls are a bit thin, so you can hear neighbouring hotel guests. I was woken at 05:15 by the woman in the next room getting ready for an early departure and couldn't get back to sleep again.

“Devonshire's finest”

Completely concur with the folks from Ottobrunn. The Barton Cross is a charming small, old world, hotel. While not high tech, the rooms are spotless and comfortable. The public areas are delightful and the food top notch. Great breakfast with haddock or kippers or traditional English on offer. The evening meal was excellent. The charges are fair and reasonable. You can be very easily disappointed (sometimes horrified) by hotels in the Exeter region. But not here. Highly recommended.

This was the fifth time we spent some days at the Barton Cross Hotel.
We want the world to know how much we always appreciated the time at this charming place. The rooms are spotlessly clean. Brian - the owner - keeps the hotel always in such good shape. The restaurant serves food of very good quality and the service is friendly all the time. For us, the Barton Cross Hotel represents the best price/performance value we faced so far in Britain.
