Originally from the highly rated 22 Mill Street restaurant in Chagford, Duncan Walker has now taken over the Old Inn in Drewsteignton, a restaurant with rooms.
We visited in February and most recently in July. We were greeted on arrival by Duncan and Anthea, followed by a tray of tea and home made fresh cherry cake. The rooms are simple but thoughtfully decorated with views over the Square or the surrounding countryside. A comfortable bed gave us a good night's sleep and the Moulton Brown toiletries in the bathroom are a luxurious touch.
Duncan's cooking is outstanding, from the appetiser of scallop with sweet potato puree in a lemon grass and ginger sauce, to the best calves liver I have eaten served with sweetbreads and basil mashed potato. Desserts are no less impressive, and included a sublime vanilla creme brulee and marinated strawberries.
A carefully chosen wine list with plenty of good drinking in the £20 - £30 bracket.
Oh, and the countryside is good too with delightul walks along the river to Castle Drogo and beyond.
All in all an outstanding combination - exceptional food and wine, relaxing surroundings and charming location - we will definitely be returning.
