“Exceptional food in an informal restaurant with rooms.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 August 2010

Originally from the highly rated 22 Mill Street restaurant in Chagford, Duncan Walker has now taken over the Old Inn in Drewsteignton, a restaurant with rooms.

We visited in February and most recently in July. We were greeted on arrival by Duncan and Anthea, followed by a tray of tea and home made fresh cherry cake. The rooms are simple but thoughtfully decorated with views over the Square or the surrounding countryside. A comfortable bed gave us a good night's sleep and the Moulton Brown toiletries in the bathroom are a luxurious touch.

Duncan's cooking is outstanding, from the appetiser of scallop with sweet potato puree in a lemon grass and ginger sauce, to the best calves liver I have eaten served with sweetbreads and basil mashed potato. Desserts are no less impressive, and included a sublime vanilla creme brulee and marinated strawberries.

A carefully chosen wine list with plenty of good drinking in the £20 - £30 bracket.

Oh, and the countryside is good too with delightul walks along the river to Castle Drogo and beyond.

All in all an outstanding combination - exceptional food and wine, relaxing surroundings and charming location - we will definitely be returning.

“Comfortable and welcoming stay in a stunning location!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 December 2009

Duncan has recently taken over the business from Charlotte, despite him moving into his new premises only weeks before he has done an excellent job in putting his stamp on the place!

I really enjoyed my stay and the fact that Duncan now offers a dining experience made it even more enjoyable! The food was absolutely divine and the breakfast the next morning was equally as heavenly.

I would suggest that the bathrooms are updated so they are kept in with the theme of the building and that some soft music is played in the background whilst you eat, purely because it is a rather cosy dining area!

I would recommend this place to anyone wishing to have a quiet, relaxing break from it all - my first trip with my boyfriend and what a memorable trip to have! Thank you to Duncan and his partner for such a wonderful stay.

“welcoming, warm, beautiful, yummy and fun!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 July 2009

I spent a weekend with Charlotte in theold inn, on my own, not expecting much. I had a beautiful room, the house is an old inn, and the village is spectacularly lovely. Charlotte's breakfasts are deservedly lehgendary, an omelette of her own invention, delicious and made from her own chicken's eggs.everything is either locally sourced or from Charlotte's garden. Charlotte is huge fun and makes her guests feel so at home they genuinly do not want to leave. I shall certianly be back and will tell everyone I know to get there as soon as they can!

“Excellent Stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 October 2008

Upon arriving we were made to feel very welcome by Charlotte, the Old Inn has a lovely, warm feeling.

I would highly recommend staying here; a great breakfast is served up each morning, a great night’s sleep in Room 1 – such a comfy mattress. It is an Ideal base with Exeter 30mins away, Dawlish 35 minutes away and Lyme Regis 1 hour from the door. It is such a quiet location as well, with a church and post office opposite – very peaceful.

I would definitely recommend staying here, When I am back in that neck of the woods I will be staying there again, for £71 per night it’s great value.
