“A Gastronomic Delight”

The Denes

A most enjoyable experience.
Both Sally and John made us all very welcome and ensured we lacked for nothing.
All the meals were of the highest standard. in particular, with the evening meals available, there was no need to go eating in any of the local restaurants,
The quality of the rooms was also of the highest standard, with plenty of nice little touches available just in case you had forgotten to bring something.
Overall a very rewarding holiday experience which will last long in our memories.
We will make it our mission to encourage others to visit and share in "The Denes " experience.
This was our second visit to "The Denes". It will not be our last!

This was an ideal base for our new house hunting. We received much useful information here besides finding a comfortable friendly welcome. It combines hospitality with a home from home atmosphere and for once, we slept well. We do so miss our superking memory foam at home!

I booked this room through the local tourist board for myself and my family. The price seemed high (£145 for 2 nights) but I needed something in the town as I was doing a local half marathon and not many places would take families.

The B&B seemed clean and tidy which was a good sign and the room was fine. The room was a bit chilly on the Friday night but we ignored that. The owners seemed friendly and helped us find the race start times that I had forgotten.

On the Saturday I went off to do the run as did most of the other hotel guests. I came back at around 2 o'clock to find my family huddled in bed in what was now a freezing cold room. I don't mind the cold but this was uncomfortable. I then went for my shower to find there was no hot water. I thought of waiting but we had plans to go out and do something with the children so I just gritted my teeth and had a cold shower. Not pleasant after a gruelling run.

I did talk to the owners later about this but the excuse from the lady was that the other hotel guests had used the hot water and she did not know anyone was in the rooms so the heating wasn't on. The excuse from the man was that he put the hot water on at 1 but it hadn't warmed up by the time I got in. This is from people who knew they had a house full of runners and knew what time the race started so could guess they would be back around lunchtime for showers.

I do believe that all B&Bs and hotels should have a basic level of comfort which includes a nice bed, a clean room, a warm room and hot water. You should at no point have to tell the owner when you want hot water or a warm room. This would have been unacceptable for a £20 room never mind a £72.50 room.

I will not be returning or recommending this B&B.

“Caught the owner on camera looking through my luggage.”

My stay at the Denes was a strange one. Initially I found the owners a bit quirky, then rude. I overheard them in their kitchen using offensive language in reference to the guests.

The real shock came when I came back after a walk to find the zippers on my luggage disturbed. I set up my video camera in the room and set it to record, announcing to the owners I was going straight out for another walk. After about fifteen minutes I returned, quietly climbing the stairs to find the owner in my room. When I came in she jumped with surprise and claimed to be checking 'something' in the room.

I then watched the video footage and discovered her opening up my luggage and looking through my belongings! I went straight to the tourist agency in the main street to show them the footage.
