“- Great Food - Relaxing - Views -”

Lynton Cottage Hotel

I booked one night at the Lynton Cottage Hotel and then saw the reviews on trip advisor! I did panic at first but told myself that people mostly write about bad experiences and not good ones.

Upon entering the hotel reception I noticed the guest book full of positive comments and started to relax! The staff were friendly and the room was very clean, comfortable and had great views.

In the evening we had a drink in the bar and were taken through to the restaurant when our table was prepared. The service was good but not stuffy and they did not top up our wine glasses after every sip!

The food was of a very high standard and we certainly did not leave feeling hungry! I believe the sign of a good chef is quality desserts, and they were amazing! As was the breakfast!

The commissioned paintings by a local artist in the restaurant were a nice touch. They will not be to everyones taste but I thought they were great and represented some of the fantastic views on offer from this hotel.

So to sum up..Great food, Great views, Great staff - a refreshing change!

“Can't wait to return”

My husband and I stayed here for three nights and cannot fault anything. The food was excellent and of good quality. We stayed in the
bay view room which has a fantasic view. The room was just wonderful and very clean.

I would like to say that all the staff we had the pleasure of meeting were all very nice and freindly, and couldn't do enough for you, even to the degree that on our return home i realised that we had left something in our room. The staff had no qualms about posting the item on to us. Dispite some reviews on this web which suggest that Dave isn't the friendliest of people - He is just very quite but a lovely man if you give him the chance.

A real treat was the home-made chocolates and bread!

We are already planning our next vist.

“Fabulous View!”

We stayed at this hotel for a weekend, a dinner bed and breakfast deal.

The room we had was fine, a bit basic and lacking in sockets -- but more than made up for by the balcony and the amazing view.
Furniture nice and in good repair, the bathroom nicely styled, clean etc although the hot water pressure was a bit low.

As regards the bed, a bit too soft for me, so I ended up sleeping on the floor, which the missus didn't mind one bit, having the whole bed to herself.

The staff were a bit surly on our first night, and we weren't that impressed by the food. The chef seemed to have had a major love affair with capers, and veggies were non-existent, except as some stylish garnish ( a pea-sized blob of pureed jerusalem artichoke doesn't count as veggies to me!). Thankfully the plentiful cheese and biscuits left us feeling replete. So, more a taste experience than anything.

Next morning, we decided to have breakfast in bed. They forgot our sunday paper, but the breakfast was enormous, and kept us busy until noon!

Drinks extortionate, and the barman rather taciturn.

“unfriendly co-owner with an ok restaurant.”

Lynton Cottage Hotel

The experience of visting here is ruined (twice) by the unfriendly male co-owner, who seems to think that 'hospitality' means not saying anything when he hands you a menu. All the women working there seemed a model of friendliness, though the gentleman co-owner needs to go on a course to develop people skills, or get out of the hotel profession altogether.

Restaurant is fine. decent views, but so do most of the hotels around here. tone spoilt for me by excessive installation of 10? 12? 14? garish paintings. the view is so beautiful, why spoil it with so many over bright near identical artworks stuffed in there. I like art in a restaurant, Rick Stein does it right, but this feels like eating in a local art show by a mid-level local painter.

Food - well it tries hard, and is a cut above most local restaurants. Like others here, I found the portions rather small for what and where we are. I consider myself an experienced dinner, I travel and eat in many international cities, and this food means well, definitely not old fashioned, but they need to stop trying to be so 'nouveau' and just give great cooked local fare, in reasonable portions - not too large, but not too small either. The prices are not cheap, and they make plenty of fuss about cooking to order, so I'd expect a little better.

I didnt stay here, Hewitts is a far nicer hotel with a great world class interior just 100yards down the road.

We did not stay in this hotel but it was recommended that we eat in the restaurant due to its great food and fabulous views. A booking was duly made and we arrived - no a la carte menu and, despite the request when booking, no table with a view. The pigeon breast starter was possibly the toughest piece of pigeon that I have ever eaten and the half duck breast that my wife had for her main course was so dry that she couldn't eat most of it. I don't know what the meat was for my main course - I know what it said on the menu but just didn't know what I was eating. The vegetables were on the crunchy side of al dente and they were a little less than generous with all portions especially the potatoes. The desert was OK but again not generous. The only bright spot was the waitress who was consisitently cheerful and polite. The bill, with wine and drinks came to £95 for the two of us and when this (with a £5 tip for the waitress only) was paid the point was made quietly at reception that this was by far the worst meal we had eaten all week the only response was "We are sorry that you were dissapointed" - no offer of recompense whatsoever.
It must be stressed that this was not at all typical of our eating experiences in and around Lynmouth and Lynton which were otherwise extremely good perhaps this is what made this meal stand out so much for all the wrong reasons.
