“cold room, pathetic service”

Lynton Cottage Hotel

Stayed in this hotel a few nights ago. The reception we received was cold and unwelcoming. The room was small, interior rather poor and the bath did not even have a proper bathtub, all for a price of £82 per night. The waitress at breakfast was the rudest waiter/waitress we have ever come across and practically screamed at us before going into the kitchen and acreaming at her staff, all of which was audible to all guests having breakfast.

The lobby is not as nice as you would find in many other hotels in the same area.

The view from the window was good but I am sure that Valley of the Rocks hotel (next to this one, only 6 pounds more a night for two in the peak season), Seawood hotel and several others would offer the same or even better as they are located on greater height than this one.

We are frequent visitors to Lynmouth and had previously stayed at The Tors (opposite in picture). We were not impressed by our last visit there and so looked for something different. A trawl of the Internet found us The Lynton Cottage. Our 4 night visit in July exceeded all expectations. The service was warm and friendly. The food and wine were exceptional. Sitting on the terrace on a warm sunny afternoon with chilled bottle of wine looking out to sea is a wonderful way to relax and this is one of very few hotels where this can actually happen. The new owners really deserve to succeed. Thanks for a memorable weekend. Paul Mason, UK

We stayed for 3 nights on a DB&B basis in Room 2. It was very spaciious and comfortably furnished with two easy chairs looking over the sea. What a view!
Food was excellent as usual and continue to exceed it star rating. We have stayed here for a number of years and one of the main reasons we keep coming back is because of the excellent menus and cooking of Allan and his team and also the very friendly atmosphere and good service from all the staff.
We will continue to go there!

WOW! You guys are finally on tripadvisor! We have stayed here so many times over the last few years, we enjoy the place so much that we would have bought it, had not Allan the Chef beat us to it!!! Of all our happy memories over the years, Lynton Cottage figures so highly. We've stayed in almost all the rooms (since 2001), and tested everything on the menu. Allan almost lives in the kitchen preparing the highest quality food. Sorry we weren't back there this year guys but we're too busy running our own hotel.

Was a bit nervous about choosing a hotel for this holiday, as I'd picked a real disaster last time. Needn't have worried! Very welcoming, relaxed but efficient in lovely old building. Huge bedroom with comfortable carved 4-poster, well appointed bathroom; sea view to die for. Food superb - unexpected in such an out-of-the-way spot. Ample for all but the greediest. No problems selecting for breakfast, and plently of choice.

Points to note - very little mobile phone reception. Would suit those trying to de-stress! Also, the time booked for dinner is the time of ordering - expect a delay as food is freshly cooked. Orders taken in strict booking rotation; but it is possible to book days ahead for the first night, and in advance afterwards, if you want to eat at particular times.

In all, one of the best places we've stayed, and excellent value for money.
