The service, the room, the cleanliness, and the facilities were all decent and exactly the same as at any other Premier Inn. They are what you expect and the price would be good, were it not for the issue below.
When we checked in, we asked for a harbour view room, simply so we would have a nice view. Those rooms were full so, fair enough, we had a room at the other side. It was not a big deal until we went to bed.
See the accompanying photos. Our room was on the first floor, a mere 3 metres from the roadway. It's only one wide lane in each direction, but it must be a busy thoroughfare. It's kind of an industrial estate neighbourhood (on the road side of the hotel) and cars, trucks, and motorcycles went roaring by at high speed until at least 2:00 AM. It gets worse. It was a hot summer weekend and the hotel has no air-conditioning. You are forced to open the window or stifle, and let yet more noise in. It was a decision between a rock and a hard place whether or not to open the window, and we experimented both ways - both horrible.
They are obviously aware of the situation. In the room already were not one, but two portable fans. We had a horrible night's sleep. The only reason I have rated this hotel "poor" and not "terrible" was because of the staff. I spoke to reception in the morning to complain, and asked to whom do I write to make an official complaint and ask for my money back. Now apparently Premier Inn have a "good sleep guarantee", and the lady gave us a full refund right there and then. She was very understanding and knew of this issue.
Still, I would rather have had a good night's sleep and pay for it than have a bad one for free. We had had a long day before and a long drive ahead of us to Cornwall that day. This hotel should not be renting out rooms on the road-side of the building, full stop. Maybe if they installed air-conditioning and sound-proof windows, it would be fine. This, by the way, would applies to all rooms on the road side.
The rooms on the harbour side would be fine. you would still hear road noise through an open window...

It really matters to us that our guests have a comfortable nights sleep, and we sincerely apologise that on this occasion we failed to provide this. We are well aware of the issue of high room temperatures, and are currently in the process of installing air conditioning into all of our hotel branches.
However, this will be a lengthy process, so in the meantime the management team at the hotel have done all they can to help reduce room temperatures. Please be assured your comments have been noted and will be fully investigated.
Once again thank you for your review, we look forward to welcoming you back to Premier Inn in the future.
