The disappointment started at check in, when they couldn't find my booking at first. Despite my having booked with the same tour company in my name for myself and partner for the last 20 plus years, the Victoria had decided to change the lead name of the booking from mine to his and also insisted on 2 separate check ins, which was a pain as he had gone off to park and unload the car. This is 2012 and women DO book holidays, you know! An unnecessary annoyance that we didn't need after a 200 m drive. Having said that for the entire weekend, the often young and/or foreign staff were extremely polite and helpful.
A few things let it down for me. Yes it is "tired" in certain areas but the main function room where we held our event was excellent. There is a reasonable choice of well-cooked food, but the portions (particularly of veg) were on the meagre side. The veg they brought us for 4 would normally serve 2 of us at home. Meat is cooked extremely thinly too. We had a couple of meals in Albert's bar which were excellent too, with larger portions there!
The most annoying part of the weekend was that last year we were lucky enough to be given an apartment but this year we got a standard room and the walls were paper thin, hearing the TV and every cough from next door. The drawers opening and closing from the adjacent room were particularly annoying as the drawers are the other side of the wall to the bed, and the noise went through us every time. An unpleasant early morning call.
A friend who had parked correctly in the car park had her car damaged by vehicles squeezing between her and a badly parked car which either should have been prevented from parking there, or been dealt with over the weekend, which spoiled the weekend for her.
Disappointing that Wifi is only available in the public rooms. I really didn't want to be carting my laptop around with me.
Still, for what we paid we had an excellent time, and would recommend the TLH complex as a base for any sort of traveller - there really is something for everybody.
