“Excellent value for money”

Ravenswood Hotel

We booked this hotel after reading the good reviews it received, but were a little concerned that all of them dated from 2007, and the bad one it got was from April 2008. However, we have just returned from a three-day stay at the Ravenswood hotel and throughly enjoyed our visit there. The owner Simon was extremely friendly and helpful, giving us tips on how to get around the area, places to visit and things to do. We booked a double room, and though it was not the biggest hotel room we have ever stayed in, it was perfectly adequate, clean and in good order. The hotel was very convenient, located just off the marina, and there were plenty of good restaurants and bars within walking distance. It is definitely a hotel we would stay at the next time we are in Torquay.

“Not great but adequate”

On booking in, owner seemed pleasant but his wife wasn't very friendly. Rooms were fairly small and the family room we had was shabby in decor, with paint splodges on the walls, cracking paint, removed locks and holes in doors, no bulb in hallway light, noisy toilet, banging water pipes through the night, yucky bathroom tiles ad just generally needed a bit of work. The website we booked it through said it was in good decorative order, but we didn't feel that was the case in our room. The room my parents shared was very small and slightly better in decor, but had paper thin walls and windows which didn't close properly. In our room, the front window did not lock and was easy to open, so it was not suitable as a family room as the drop was sheer (and we have a 5 year old). There was no bedside light in my son's single room so he had to sleep with the main light on. The light between my room and my son's room had no bulb in it, so I had to leave my light on and the door open so that he could find me. It just wasn't geared to being a family room and it could do with someone doing some work to it.
On the plus side, the beds and linen were clean and comfortable. The breakfast was also fine, with nice english breakfast and other choices. We travel a lot, and have recently stayed at the Red House Hotel in Torquay. At the Red House, the standard of decor and facilities are far superior, yet we only paid £70 B+B for this as opposed to the £60 at the Ravenswood. The Red House has a gym, indoor and outdoor pools and bar, for £10 more!! I know where I will be returning, and I am sad to say that I won't go back to the Ravenswood, even though Simon is a nice guy

We welcome constructive comments and this guest's comments were accurate at the time. We have used the comments as an impetus to redecorate the room (May 2008). You will see from the other reviews that this review of doesn't reflect the general state of our rooms. but the cumulative effect of children on our family room decoration. Simon

If you're looking for a hotel with a friendly and cozy atmosphere then you'll enjoy your stay at the Ravenswood.

I was there with my boyfriend's family (5 persons) and all agreed that it was a very pleasant stay.

What I really liked:
1) location (near the next shopping centre, restaurants and the sea)
2) friendly and warm atmosphere as the hotel is run by a nice couple
3) the owner's (german) language skills
4) our spaciousand calm room

It altogether contributed to a nice and relaxing stay in Torquay. Thank you for all.

My girlfriend and I booked this Hotel for a short break. Upon arrival we were welcomed by the owner Simon. He was very courteous and informative. Nothing we asked for was too much trouble. The room was very clean, tidy and spacious. The bed was great (after such a long drive). We loved the breakfast, very filling and well presented. All in all we will return to Torquay and Simon's great little hotel, mostly because of his 5 star service level. Normally you'd pay twice or three times as much and get half the service or view. We will be back, that's for sure. Paul & Ingrid 2 very happy guests.
