“Should be 5 star”

Somerville Hotel

10 Jul 2008

Was not too sure what to expect when driving up to the Somerville, but the interior and warm welcome soon allayed my fears. The room we stayed in was also lovely. Won lots of points with the wife for picking this hotel. We had never been to Torquay before and Adam helped us plan trips around the area. He was quite unbiased and informative. We had a great few days in the area thanks to him. Our room (the Somervill Suite, room 7) had a separate little living room perfect for two with its own flatscreen TV and coffee/tea making area. They even have fresh cookies, baked daily, in the lobby which are fantastic. The bedroom was well appointed with a matching flatscreen (no arguements over what to watch). The bed was really comfortable. The en-suite shower room is very spacious for a hotel room and was well appointed. The decor is tasteful and welcoming.

The only negative is the slight bit of noise from the road outside. There are ample parking facilities off-road as well.

Without wanting to go on too long, we would not hesitate to recommend this hotel and will definitely stay there again if we are ever in the area.

“Great Hotel”

We stayed in one of the deluxe rooms at the Somerville and were very impressed. The decor and furniture in the room would not have looked out of place in a 5 star hotel. Bathroom was excellent and spotless.

Breakfast was also great, with a good choice and even a vegetarian option without having to make a special request. The staff were friendly and helpful. We will be staying here again and would recommend to anyone.

“Great Hotel Good Location Very Friendly”

Stayed on a Saturday night in Oct 2007. Went to Torquay to watch the football on the Sunday. Had a great night out in Torquay.
Hotel is located about 5 mins walk (uphill) from the town centre and could be a bit of a problem for less able customers.
The owner was very friendly and made us all (5 people) very welcome. The hotel entrance is a bit dated but ok.
The rooms were very clean and had recently been refurbished so the furniture including beds were all fairly new. Rooms are nicely decorated. We had a shower room ensuite the shower did not have enough power but was adequate.
Slept like a log on the big bed but this may be due to not getting in it until 1.30 in the morning.
Breakfast was excellent and very nicely cooked and presented.
All in all a great find and well worth another visit.

“Bury FC footy fans”

we had been planning to have a nights stay in torquay for a while, when bury fc played torquay fc, the manager was really welcoming and friendly and the room was very comfortable and well decorated for the price we had payed. It has good facilities like a pool table, a bar and a conservatory aswell as a dining room which was a very good size. We sat in the conservatory and had extremely good views of torquay harbour and centre and it was a really peaceful atmosphere, this is a very recommended hotel.

“great last minute choice!”

We decided on a very last minute getaway for the night, and booked through activehotels, and got a good b&b rate.

The hotel has 12 rooms, and our room didn't have a view (which we knew when we booked) but in chilly and rainy December, this was not a problem!

Car park had plenty of space and on check-in the gentleman was ready with a map of Torquay and highlighted several restaurants where we might like to eat that evening.

Our room was spotlessly clean and a lot of thought has gone into the decor and finishing touches. No bath in the bathroom, but excellent shower. The bed was very comfy, and one of the better ones I have slept in away from home.

The stroll down the hill to the harbourside takes less than 5 minutes, and the stroll back up the hill, slightly more than 5 minutes! However, the hill is far from the steepest in the area, we found those the next morning when we did the cliff walk.

The breakfast was lovely, and upon hearing that I was a vegetarian, offered vegetarian sausages as an alternative. In my experience, this seldom happens in the 'big chains' of hotels, so to happen in an independently run hotel was a pleasant surprise.

The service at The Somerville was excellent, and should we visit Torquay again, we will definitely stay again.
