Lots of times in Torquay but never been here before. Decided to put that right last night, Friday. Booking made on phone, OK. Confirmation phonecall to my phone that day was polite but no number left on answer phone so couldnt return the call. When I had driven 4 hrs to Torquay I phoned the restuarnat to be met by a screaming child, shouting and an extremely abrupt reply saying 'What?' I said we would be attending at 7 and told Ok then the phone was hung up. Not a positive impression at this point. Upon arrival was disspointed by the decor...feels like a cafe or lower end Bistro BUT the food was excellent, and plenty of it. Maybe on the dear side but couldnt fault the fish dishes at all. All perfect. The dessert I had, creme brulee, wasnt set but still nice. ( I am a pastry chef so know that the egg custard shouldnt be liquid). I didnt comment to the Maitre 'd (Paul) as he seemed extremely stressed, bordering on rude with no customer service skills (which has been made mention of in other reviews so nothing has changed). It was as if he wasnt interested in the customers, just wanted to get them fed, watered and then out so he could turn the table. He managed to do this as there was many people coming in for tables but we did feel very rushed as the staff were obviously watching to see if you had finished and literally as you put your last forkfull of food in your mouth they came and cleared the plates. A couple of times they even arrived at the table thinking we had finished but then turned away when they realised we hadnt. All in all not a relaxing evening but as said, the cooking staff save this place from a lot more negative reviews.
