We were fortunate enough to eat at both number 7 and rick steins in the same period. On balance quality of ingredients, value for money and atmosphere Number 7 won hands down.
OK padstow is very elegant and 5 star, and difficult to fault, Number seven by comparison is compact, a little rough round the edges but if anything it adds to the atmosphere.
We were a party of ten on a wet friday night, apologies to anyone else in that evening.
We ate both from menu and the staff also did us a couple of requested meals. A whole turtbot poached was fabulous, lobster - very good, john dory fresh and at 29 for a whole fish - the same price as a fillet at padstow, oysters were fresh, all in all superb.
Bill was £660 including two bottles of tattinger, beer, wine and coffee - 66 a head
Service was friendly if a little chaotic at times (although that could have been our doing)
