“Beware”

Maemar Hotel

The rooms at the hotel are clean and basic but that is what you expect for the price. The problem with the hotel is the security. Our room was robbed on the first night we were there, and when we reported it to the night porter we found him very unhelpful. Rather than accept what we were saying he just kept repeating that it was "impossible" then eventually said "we had a problem with room 3 but impossible for all others". We don't know how the thief got into the room but a friend returned earlier in the evening and mentioned the next morning that when he arrived the keys rather than being locked away were just sitting on the unattended reception desk. The incident was reported to the police who said that have had problems before at the hotel and there a couple of other on-going cases. This was not mentioned to any of us in our group even though the police mentioned that the hotel should have warned us. The receptionist said that she would get the manager to speak to us but he never bothered to turn up.

“Lift not working when we stayed”

My daughter and I stayed at the Maemar in a twin room for one night on 21st Aug. The room had been refurbished, so the decor was good, although plain, and, although the room was tiny, it was adequate enough for our needs. The bathroom had been refurbished to an excellent standard, although only had a shower, no bath. The room was clean enough, although the bedside table had obviously not been wiped-there had been a drink spilt on it. We stayed on the third floor, up various flights of stairs-some very steep, and when we stayed, the lift wasn't working. The staff did offer to carry our bags up for us though, and were very helpful, although it would have been a great deal MORE helpful if the proprietor had mentioned this when I booked the day before. Now to the worrying bit -it was very hot and stuffy in the room, but when we came to open the upper part of the window (the only bit that opens) it only swung out about 6 inches, due to a limiter on the side. We were situated at the back of the hotel, and the fire escape was directly below our window, but there was no way we could get out of the window to reach it, except to try and break the sealed glass unit, there was nothing there to break it with though. Other windows in the row (we could just see them if we craned our necks) were opened wide, so it just appeared to be ours. Another very worrying thing - there were fire doors all over the place that were propped open with door stops or bits of wood etc. There were notices on them that stated they were fire doors and they should be kept closed. We tested the magnetic things that are supposed to hold the doors open, but let them shut in event of fire, but these weren't working. There were also a lot of big, heavy, full laundry bags left about in corridors that would thus hamper escape in the event of fire. Refurbishing work was still going on while we were there. All in all, a budget hotel, and fine for a cheap short stay (the breakfast was lovely) BUT, I was extremely worried about the fire precautions (or lack of them) and it would have been nice to be told about that lift.....
