I've just come back from a one night stag do trip to Bournemouth and a stay at the Chelsea Hotel.
I must admit having read the reviews I was aprehensive to say the least! I've stayed in a whole range of places through the UK and Europe and anyone booking anything should always consider all aspects and TripAdvisor is great for that.
So basically my review. We arrived in Bournemouth with just enough time to get our keys and head off to paintballing. We met the landlady, settled up had the rules explained to us and had a quick look at the rooms. The landlady was pleasent and chatty throughout she gave us no issues and likewise we were couterous and respectful. Our group had the 2 large groundfloor rooms with 4 in one room 3 in the other room. The rooms were clean, fresh smelling and cleanly decorated. The larger of the two rooms had 3 singles and a double bunk. The other 4 single beds.
A few hours of fun later we returned, unpacked and took a shower. The larger 5 bed room had a bigger ensuite and larger shower unit and the 4 bed room ensuite was considerably smaller but both were clean. Like some reviewers said a larger person would struggle in the smaller ensuite but it was adequte for a quick refresh and shower for us. I was last to shower and the hot water started to run cool but 6 other lads had just drained the hot water so I cannot really complain about that.
The landlady had arranged to have one bed removed from the larger room as it was not required which made the room more spacious and have room between beds. Our other room was cosy with no room between beds but it was ok. You have to consider that if an all male, or all female party, the beds are packed in for maximum occupancy but all we were looking for was a warm bed to sleep in after a night in town.
Being a stag do we took the opportunity to have couple of drinks in the hotel bar before hitting the town, we chatted to the landlady who was chatty and pleasent.
After a night on the town we had very few hours to cram in some sleep and vacated in the morning. No problems and no complaints. All in all I believe we got what we paid for. A relatively cheap hotel with comfy, if a little cramped when full, rooms. It has great access to the train station and a 10-15 min walk from town.
The landlady has chosen a tough clientel base taking mainly stag do's and for all the negative reviews on here I have not heard any one admit to being a di*k themselves which is often the start of any conflict. All I can say is that we were polite, courteous and considerate of the rules as we could be considering the amount of alcohol that passed our lips and we and had no issues whatsoever; maybe the bad reviewers were too? I'm in no position to say
All I can say in summary is that my experiance was a good one. Is it a hotel suitable for couples or familes? I'd say no but that's not all down to the hotel. Knowing the fact that stag do's and similar parties chose the hotel why would you risk noisy and potentially volatile people? the Chelsea hotel served a purpose of bedding down for a few hours before getting off home to real life.
I cannot yet speak for excess charges as some reviews do. I do not expect any as the rooms were left as found, bar slept in beds and use of the bathrooms, and some proabably unsavory man smells! And all keys returned as stated in the rules briefing.
Other experiances differ to mine so all I can say is we knew the rules, we followed the rules, broke nothing and returned all our keys. the landylady was always polite and chatty. We experianced what I would expect for the price we paid and I'm content we got what we paid for.
