It is always difficult reviewing establishments at the budget end of the market as there is always the 'well what did you expect at that price' element to it, but this hotel has a 4 star English Tourism rating and some good reviews so we thought we would give it a try.
Location wise it is a winner, less than 10 minutes from the town, a couple from the cliff tops and right on the routes for the Circular bus tour and the open top bus to Swanage. Less than 2 minutes walk from the excellent Indian Ocean restaurant. Parking was not a problem during our stay and despite the hotel being deep in Stags/Hens territory outside noise was minimal.
On arrival at 12.20 we were told our room was not ready. As check in is from 12 noon this was disappointing after a long journey but we gritted our teeth and went to find lunch.
Our room on the first floor had a very confortable bed with small en suite and was at the front of the building. Unfortunately the basin plug was broken so you either had to prise it out with fingers or not have a basin of water. The shower was tempremental to the point of despare, fluctuating between icy cold or scalding hot despite the controls being set for just warm. The toilet paper supplied was of the poorest quality disintergrating as you used it with unpleasant results, we went and bought our own for hygiene reasons. The standard of cleaning was generally good, but the area between the bed and bedside cabinets had obviously not been vacuumed recently, a crevice tool would have done the job easily.
The food served for breakfast was of an excellent standard, the sausages and bacon were paticularly delicious. Sadly little things let it down. On our first morning we asked for youghurt only to be told there was none available( there is a small supermarket less than 40 seconds walk away that had a good selection) on our second morning the fruit juices were warm not chilled, and on our final morning we waited almost 20 minutes for our order to be taken despite there being only 2 other tables already seated, was the waitress cooking as well I wonder?
What has really made me mark this hotel down though was the fact that on our penulimate day we arrived back at the hotel at about 4pm to freashen up only to find that there was no hot water!!!! On telling the manager he informed me that all the guests must have taken a shower in the last hour and used up all the water!! I believe that to be utter rubbish. If that was the case what happends in the morning when everyone gets up for a shower? He told us it would be hot in 15-20 minutes, in fact it was almost an hour before the water was hot enough to use.
I have never ever stayed anywhere before when this has occured and it is unforgivable.
Just an upgrade of the shower and a little more thought and effort would probably made this hotel worthy of the 4 stars it has.
