We don't really want to write this review as we don't want Hazel cottage to become so popular that it's not available next time we want to book a room!
Sydling St Nicolas itself is a delightfully quiet hamlet that's convenient for the whole of Dorset and seems to be a living village (not dominated by second homes) with a pub that provides excellent food. Hazel Cottage borders the stream that runs through the village.
Penny and Charles made us feel incredibly welcome in their home, almost part of the family, for the whole of our one week stay. They invited us to use the pretty cottage garden and conservatory at any time. Charles was a veritable font of knowledge on the local area, with suggestions for trips, walks, restaurants etc.
Our ground floor bedroom was comfortable and well equipped, with a wall of books, tourist information and personal momentos. The tea tray exemplified their attention to detail; as well as the usual range of teas Penny provided real coffee, fresh milk in a flask (clearly someone who understands that UHT milk adversely flavours tea) and fruit cordials (something I love but no one ever offers)
The breakfasts plentiful with locally sourced or home made ingredients; home made museili mix with organic greek yoghurt; freshly prepared fruit salad; rich yellow scrambled eggs; exceptional bacon and sausages and raspberry jam that seemed to be 100% fruit. (we were lucky to be able to persuade Penny to part with a jar of gooseberry jam).
We'll go back as soon as we can.
