My Wife and I stayed here for a 2 day break, although I spoke to both the owners when booking when we stayed,I only saw maggie.

The parking isnt mentioned in any of the other reviews, 9 rooms but only 4 spaces. a complete nightmare. no where to park the car near as all yellow lined and main roads.

I found this b&b a little dated and over priced, check out time of 10.00am means you eat breakfast at a rush and then have to scramble your belongings and out. not the best

We were extremely disappointed to hear you had such an unsatisfactory stay with us and that you then did not take the opportunity to respond to our personal message seeking clarification as to the dates and room you stayed in as we have been unable to identify you as a guest.

Your issue with regards to parking is intriguing as every genuine reservation made at the Castleton receives written confirmation which clearly states the parking situation. Detailed parking arrangements are also on our website.
Additionally as you have narrowed down the weekend in question to April 4-7 (this was the only occasion Julian had been away from the hotel) we had 2 free spaces all weekend and ample unrestricted parking all around the hotel. We therefore find it hard to appreciate just why this caused you such a ‘nightmare’.

Your comment that the Castleton is a little dated is surprising given that an ultra modern feel would not be appropriate to an elegant Victorian building full of period character. Our aim is to retain the charm of the original hotel and introduce modern conveniences such as digital TV/DVD and free WiFi for guest use, as well as comforts such as pillow top mattresses, crisp fresh new linen, and new carpets throughout the public areas. These extras have been added in the 5 months since taking over this delightful hotel and exceed the expectations of our many Guests, both new and returning.

That said we do appreciate that our bright & airy rooms, spotlessly clean (see other reports) with large en-suite bathrooms are not to everyone’s taste.

We would take issue with regards to being ‘overpriced’. Based upon the quality of accommodation and service delivered, guests at the Castleton continually comment on the good value for money we offer. Our tariffs are comparable with other Guest Houses in the area of similar high quality and rating.

We are surprised you felt breakfast was rushed. Guests do seem to enjoy and indeed savour a leisurely breakfast of locally produced, freshly cooked ingredients, fresh fruit and pastries in our spacious, bright Conservatory Dining room. Your own unfortunate experience appears to be unique.

We do have a check out time of before 11.00am which is to give us time to service our rooms to the highest standards in time for incoming Guests, which our Customers fully appreciate and understand is common practice in hotels of this high standard.

If you can supply us with proof of your original stay (booking confirmation letter or credit card receipt etc.) we would welcome the opportunity to ‘rectify’ your unfortunate experience and if you would care to contact us directly on 01929 423972 or via e mail stay@thecastleton.co.uk I am confident we can offer you a Castleton experience that is in keeping with every Guest who has actually stayed with us.

To be honest, my wife and I were not sure we'd done the right thing when we booked 4 nights at The Castleton, as the owners were new to the place and new to the business.
We needn't have worried, as Julian and Maggie were extremely welcoming and very keen to ensure that our stay was comfortable. We are great ones for 'detail' – it's the little things that help to make such holidays successful – and The Castleton's proprietors made sure that everything was perfect. The food (breakfast) was excellent, the decor fresh and clean, the staff friendly and accommodating. The position in Swanage is very good, ten minutes stroll alongside the beach into town.
We've stayed in scores of B&Bs and hotels, found quite a few wanting, but it really is hard to think of anything bad to say about this place - if I had to, I guess that in high season parking might be an issue, but that would apply to many such places.
Overall, this place is excellent & highly recommended.
(We will be going back – there is far too much around Swanage and Purbeck to visit in just 4 nights.)

The Castleton is a superb B&B / guesthouse we fell upon, looking for a peaceful weekend in the Swanage Bay area.
We were welcomed by our hosts who were a delight and for whom no request was too much trouble. The attention to detail was a joy and the breakfast truly delicious. We will be back. Thank you to our hosts, Maggie and Julian. We understand they have only recently taken over at The Castleton. They are to be congratulated.

So many small hotels fail to live up to being anything special, so imagine our surprise when we stumbled on this little gem. Our hosts, Julian and Maggie went out of their way to insure that we were comfortable. Our beautiful, clean room was filled with extra touches, such as the well - stocked hospitality tray which included bottled water. We also had a DVD player and were invited to borrow books and DVD’s from a large selection in the comfortable lounge. So many places let themselves down with low quality breakfast ingredients; not so here, as the breakfast consisted of locally sourced free range eggs, bacon and quality sausages.
To add to our delight we were able to enjoy one of the best restaurants we have ever been to, only two minutes walk away. Our only regret was that we did not stay long enough.

“what a fantastic family break”

The Castleton

28 Mar 2008

As a family we have know stayed at the Castleton twice already this year. (it is that good). The whole Hotel is spotless. We have stayed in two differant rooms and both were well decorated and very well equipped. (our eight year old loved the powerful shower in the rooms), we had a seperate bedroom with a connecting corridor for the children which they thought was great.
(room 9). The owners Maggie and Jullian are both friendly, helpfull and made us feel very welcome from the miniute we walked in the front door. There is a very relaxing lounge with TV and Games for all the family to use. In the morning you could not fault the full english breakfast useing some local produce. The whole family are looking forward to staying again soon.
