We visited Sam's on a busy evening but were welcomed by pleasant waiting staff.
We were seated at a a table for four along the wall. Unfortunately there was another table for two right behind us and no room to get out - I noticed the person who was eating there had his drink spilled by someone squeezing past. It would be much better if that table for two wasn't there at all - it's all a bit squashed in that part of the room.
We had nice bread and a small dish of olive oil/balsamic vinegar.
I ordered a dry martini which came with a twist and tasted fine but it was the smallest dry martini I have ever been offered - it came in a small martini style glass but barely came half way up at a guess I would say it wasn't much more than a double measure - I thought £7 a bit steep.
We had starters of squid and liver parfait - both fine 'though the squid was a small portion.
Mains were Lamb and Aubergine Curry (may not have been called a 'curry' but it was like a mild vegetarian curry) both ok but the curry consisted of three more or less equal mounds of rice/curry/plain spinach - I really felt as though the curry part was too small and it was the tastiest part so half as much again would have been about right. There were no extras such as raitta chutney or bread with the curry.
We didn't have pudding.
When the bill arrived we had been over-charged for our wine - the waitress quickly apologized and amended the bill.
I don't know how long Sam's has been open but it just has a rather unloved look to it and I thought the toilet seemed a bit scruffy for a mid range restaurant. Perhaps it needs a re-vamp.
Taking everything in to consideration I considered it rather expensive and probably wouldn't return.
