I booked this hotel on the recommendation of a colleague who had received a discount rate on a sea-view top-floor room. He said it was cheap and clean. Our double was not cheap, did not have a sea view, and was not on the top floor. It was on an apparently deserted floor that smelt (the smell hits you like a wall when the lift doors open) like the inside of one of the old routemaster buses. A number 38, in fact. On the buses the smell was from damp, rotten carpet. I assume that the hotel had the same problem. The room itself was small and shabby. I pulled back the blanket and there were human hairs in the bed. The sheets were stained. I opened a drawer to discover a tea set, with hairs in the cups. The hotel was noisy throughout the night and I slept terribly. Thankfully, the shower worked well so I was able to wash off some of the grime. We had paid for two breakfasts, but dreading to think what the hygiene standards in the kitchen might have been like, just got out of there as quickly as we could.
