“Better than expected!!”

West Beach Hotel

4 Feb 2008

We stayed here for a hen weekend with a group of 16. The hotel was the cheapest we could find in Brighton to accomodate all of us.

The location was great, about a 5-10 minute walk into the lanes, the rooms were pretty basic but served the purpose. Although a little drafty.

The breakfast's were okay, the english breakfast is an extra £3.50.

There is a bar and club in the basement and ground floor, however we couldn't hear any noise from this.

I stayed with a group of friends for a hen night, we had 2 x triple rooms at the front of the hotel on the second floor. There is no doubt the hotel is tired and old and in desperate need of an overhaul but for the price we paid there wasn't scope to complain. Our room faced the front and had a lovely view of the promenade, it was quite large too with a large bathroom, the shower worked fine and there were plenty of towels. Bedding was fresh and clean and the single beds were quite comfortable.

Yes there is a noisy nightclub downstairs but we could not hear the music in our room. I left too early the following morning to take breakfast.

Don't expect luxury but don't pay over the odds either. The place is fine for a weekend with friends, hens, stags etc. maybe not so for older couples, families etc.

“Horror Hotel”

West Beach Hotel

30 Jul 2007

I stayed in this hotel over my birthday weekend and I must say it put a whole negative slant on my stay in Brighton. It was dirty, worn and hideously old fashioned. Apart from the bags of rubbish in the hallway, towels on the floor, holes in the carpet and death trap lift our room was horrific. Sick stains on the carpet, dirty curtains and a bathroom I came out of being less clean. Do not stay at this hotel, the photos on the website are totally misleading and unless you are happy paying £80 for a dirty, below par hostel style room, find somewhere else.

We had a great stay here. The staff are really friendly and helpful - they even saved us money by moving us from two twins to a triple. The room was spotless, the bathroom clean, the shower was powerful, the TV worked, tea and coffee was provided, windows opened - all the things the other reviewers didn't get - so either we were very lucky or they're making a mountain over a molehill.

Yes it is used by German students, and there is a nightclub downstairs – so we were very disappointed to return from our night out to find everyone tucked up in bed.

Is it a place I’d take my elderly relatives? No, but then again I’m not so naive / tight-fisted as to book the cheapest hotel in town and then expect the Ritz. You get what you pay for and this hotel provides excellent value for money. The location makes it a great base for a weekend in Brighton.

“Hotel? Not worthy of that title...”

West Beach Hotel

27 Jul 2007

Having looked at the website, the hotel looked like a pleasant place to stay. On arrival, we realised it was not. The reception area gives off much more of a grotty youth hostel feel and the staff all seem a bit clueless.

There were a few of us staying in the hotel. One member of the party was in a single room. However, this was an ajoining room and the connecting door did not lock. There were also blood stains on her sheets, lovely. In my twin room, we discovered on arrival drawers filled with opened packets of biscuits, deodrant, sanitary towels and used tissues. Management did come and remove these, but the cleaner responsible insisted the room was clean and she had checked it herself...not very thoroughly it seemed.

Also, there was no soap or shower gel etc provided - which for £80 a night you pretty much expect. When we asked for this, reception were reluctant to provide anything but ultimately did give us some nasty cheap sachets of shower gel.

Breakfast looked very unappetising and again was much more hostel standard than hotel. (custard creams and bourbon biscuits - weird). You also had to pay extra if you wanted to 'upgrade' to a hot breakfast! We didn't like our chances so went to M&S instead.

Very basic and grotty - a total rip off, you could probably find a nicer hostel. Don't stay there!!!
