“Hotel of Horrors!!”

West Beach Hotel

One night we stayed in this place!! To start with, there was the smell of smoke everywhere in the hotel, even in the lifts and outside our rooms on the 2nd floor, despite a no smoking sign in reception. There was scaffolding all around the hotel, and we could not open the windows in our rooms. We could hear the workman outside using abusive language to one another, and because of this the curtains were drawn as it was not a pleasant site. The windows were dirty as well. The bath had a handrail loose, and this caused one of us to suffer some bruises after a fall. We had not been previously informed that there was a nightclub on the ground floor next to reception, and the loud music they had on until after 2am in the morning! There was people shouting and swearing, with cars revving up loud outside. This was no place to have a decent night's sleep. We went to have breakfast the next morning, and there was uncovered food left there, which we decided to leave it. If you were stuck in Brighton for somewhere to stay, and this was the last resort, you may be better off sleeping in your car.

A group of 10 of us stayed here for a stag do - bank holiday weekend in May and it cost us £37 each! The nearest we could find to that was £80 per person, so if your just after a base for a night out and somewhere to crash afterwards, this is ideal.

It looks like it has been refurbished (or in the process of). Everything is clean - it's just no frills, like you would expect for the price. It's location is seafront and close to everything which is ideal.

If you're worried about the club below, dont be. It's a fairly modest bar with no problems. There arent drunks wondering upstairs to your rooms.

If you're thinking of a weekend away with your wife or children, then maybe no, but a hen/stag just a weekend away with the mates, it is ideal.

“Never again!! The worst hotel I have ever stayed in!!”

This is the worst hotel I have ever stayed in!! Don't do it to your self, spend a few more quid & check in somewhere else!

Location was great, staff were ok, hotel was a nightmare!!!

Checked in on the Friday for 2 nights, the 1st room was too hot, we couldn't open any windows as there was scaffolding all around the building, we couldn't turn the heating off either as there we no controls, we spoke to reception who came up, had a look at the room and moved us to another room as they also said it was too hot.

The next room was worse, dirty bathroom, dirty carpets, but not hot & we could open the windows.

What we didn't know about this room, until coming back after a fantastic meal in Brighton, was that the room they put us in was directly over a night club, which is part of the hotel, the music was VERY LOUD, we couldn't sleep, it was awful, just as we began to nod off, the fire alarms went off, we called reception to ask what was going on, was there a fire or not? the receptionist didn't know & had to ask his colleague who assured us there was no fire, we were told the alarms do go off every now & again! We then asked to be moved again as the music was too loud!! So at 1.30am they said we could move to the 2nd floor, but we had to collect keys from reception. So, we got dressed, headed down to reception to get new room keys only to be greeted by a man covered in blood, he had been beaten up in the club down stairs - nice!

There was no security in this place, people are allowed to walk in & out of the hotel from the club downstairs. There was no door policy or security, so it was basically open to the public. I don't think it's acceptable to find people out side your room from the club downstairs looking for the toilets at 1.30 am.

There were also some shifty looking/behaving people wandering around the hotel at this time. I was scared at this point & wanted to leave, so when we checked into our 3rd room I put the chair up against the door. Oh yes & the next morning, someone walked into our room.

The next morning, we went downstair, demanded our money back for the next evenings stay, they said we would have to write a letter of complaint, we said is not acceptable & we were threatened with the police - for what? Not wanting to spend another night in this hell hole. Eventually we got our money back the for the 2nd night & checked into the Hilton a few doors down, what a breath of fresh air that was.

Booked this hotel as we were attending a gig in the club . ( The Puppini SIsters)

First room offered had no lock on the door and an interconnecting door to another room whcih also did not lock!

Reception changed the room with no fuss. Second room fine, basic but clean and everything we needed.

The puppini sisters were fantastic and we danced until 1.a.m.
DIdn't arrive for breakfast until 9-50 ( it is served until 10) but they were fine and we had a very good cooked breakfast served by friendly and attentive staff.

Reception staff were very friendly on both check in and out.

I would stay here again if out on the town in Brighton, location is excellent and price resasonable .

“Very dirty and suffering from years of neglect”

While the West Beach Hotel website wouldn't win any design awards one could fairly argue that it presents its subject in a more than flattering light....and probably an unreasonably flattering light.

I booked a stay of two nights (Fri/Sat) in July this year with my sister. I'd struggled to find accommodation elsewhere in Brighton at this time. I paid a deposit of eighty pounds - the cost of one night of our stay in a twin room.

The entrance to the hotel is in very bad shape. The whole exterior has been badly neglected, the windows are completely filthy and many of the wooden window frames must only be a couple of years from being completely rotted away.

The building has subsided considerably and as a result we opened the door to our room with some difficulty. A lot of the floors are also far from being level.

After pointing out that the broken toilet seat was propped against the bath and that the room had not been cleaned properly (or at all) we were moved to a new room.

The conditions there weren't much better. The room was thoroughly dirty – the furniture was old, battered and soiled, the walls, and windows, inside and out, were in a similar condition and there was old chewing gum ingrained in the carpet. The bathroom in our room was dirty and mouldy; there were holes in the walls; paper was peeling off the walls. The overall feeling was of long term neglect.

We felt that we had been ripped off after paying £160. There's no way it represents value for money. Sadly, we knew that there would be no other vacant rooms in town.

After pointing all of this out to the West Beach we received a total refund of forty pounds. Unsatisfied with this, we wrote to the owners (based in Germany) - they ignored our email and we are still waiting for a reply four months on.

In reality, the hotel is set up as a low grade hostel for mainly young people who are participants in a language school that is run by the West Beach's owners. It probably suits these people to pay a small amount for their accommodation. It certainly won't suit short stay guests looking for a simple, decent and clean hotel room.
