The Alvia is a modern, tastefully decorated hotel with a warm, homely atmosphere.
The hotel is in a good location - 3 mins walk to the seafront, 5/10 mins walk to Brighton pier and 15 mins walk to the main shopping area. My husband and I felt that it was a good location, but any further away and we would have been a little disappointed (we like to be in the thick of it!!)
St. James's Street is 3 mins walk away and has lots of cafes, restaurants and shops. We had a lovely Chinese meal there on our last night.
The staff were extremely friendly and couldn't do enough. The free breakfast was superb. There was lots of choice (english, continental, vegetarian), lots of it and it was beautifully cooked and presented.
The hotel itself is a typical townhouse - quite narrow with around 4 floors. It is breautifully decorated and gives a feel of just having been refurbished. We stayed in room 10 which was on the very top floor (Venetian room) and were told it had recently been re-decorated. It was a lovely room with LCD tv on the wall, leather furniture etc. However, I could imagine that the elderly or infirm would find climbing all those stairs difficult. Also, the walls are quite thin. Our bathroom was in between us and the room next door so we couldn't here anyone. However, when we were in the bathroom we could. Not sure whether this set up is the same for all rooms, but it's something to bear in mind.
The hotel offers parking vouchers in the form of scratch cards - £5 per voucher for 24 hrs. This is good value and saved us a lot of hassle. The only disadvantage is that the hotel is on a relatively busy road and it's quite difficult to find a space. On our 1st night we had to park 2 roads away. It took us about 5/10 mins to walk to our car. However, Sundays are free, which saved us £5, and on our last night we were able to park right outside.
Overall, a lovely, modern, friendly hotel. We would stay here again, but advise anyone who finds climbing stairs difficult to think again.
