“Nice and neat but not so sweet!”

Leona House

Stayed at Leona house at a recent conference in April 2007 and the room itself was lovely. Expensive duvet, furnishings etc but it lacked in cleanliness. The bathroom was tiny and no way could you bend over to shave your legs in the cubicle!

The owners were somewhat scary in their manner and they both wore the same clothes for 3 days! Off putting too when the wife has long flowing afro caribbean hair when cooking breakfast.

The curtains in the well decorated dinning room were stained and the room looked like it hadn't been swept and wiped for months.

They were accommodating and friendly enough but an uneasy place of rest nonetheless.

Felt like I should get the bleach and duster out. Wouldn't stay there again.

“Leona house is Brilliant!”

Leona House

17 Aug 2007

My boyfriend and I had a fantastic weekend in Brighton, which was helped by staying at Leona House. The location was fantatsic - central to everything! The owners were very welcoming and extremely helpful in telling us about the events going on and where places of interest are.
The cooked breakfast was delicious and we even got an extra sausage!! (It was a mistake so any one visiting don't ask for 2!)
I will definately be visitng Brighton and Leona House again.

Thank you Paul and Hazel x x

“Fantastic location”

Not quite as glam as the pics on their website would suggest, but a decent B&B nevertheless. We paid £90 per night for a twin en suite and were very pleased overall. The room was a decent size with 1 single bed and 1 double bed (both very comfy) - there were fluffy pillows and bathrobes as promised but alas, no mineral water. Everything was clean, the bathroom was a little small but okay.
Our room was on the top floor so we didn't hear a great deal of noise from the street.
The breakfast was very nice (good veggie option, but no continental option) although if you are staying longer than one night make sure you specify what time you require breakfast for each morning. We had a 9am breakfast on the first morning and they presumed we'd turn up the same time the next morning. Infact we had decided to turn up for the 10am sitting instead, so there was a bit of confusion. Easily sorted out though and we didn't have to wait too long for our food.
The location was brilliant, very central and close to the seafront and the Lanes.
All in all, I liked Leona House and would stay there again. It's unpretentious, unlike some of the "boutique" hotels you tend to find in Brighton which are essentially glorified B&Bs!

Small tip: phone the B&B if you want to book a room, don't email. They took ages to reply!!!

“An oasis in Brighton”

Leona House

28 Mar 2007

We stayed at this hotel last weekend and loved the place. The owners were really friendly and welcoming, the bedrooms were extremely comfortable and clean, the decor was tasteful and much attention was paid to detail. Greatly enjoyed the cooked breakfast each morning! The hotel is in a brilliant position a stone's throw from the sea and minutes from the Lanes and the excellent pubs of Brighton. We had a fantastic weekend and will definitely be returning soon!

“Not perfect but .........”

Leona House

2 Nov 2006

At first sight the Leona does not seem like much - Middle Street may be very central but it's also a little bit seedy and at night is not very inviting - the exterior is shabby and the surrounding buildings a bit creepy. However once you step inside, the property is well maintained and the owner is a sweetie and made me feel at home. I got a huge room right at the top with a double bed and huge single. Quite a hike up the stairs so be warned if you have lots of luggage or a bad leg.

The room was quite clean and the beds full of fluffy pillows and comfortable. The bathroom though was really tiny with a miniature sink. Coffee and tea making facilities were available and well stocked which was good since I didn't get a choice of breakfast time - it was 9 o'clock or nothing so I skipped it. On my second night however the owners were quite happy for me to have my son come and stay in the spare bed and we both got a hearty breakfast the next day at no extra charge. (fee for single or double was the same though). The Tv and DVD worked and all in all it was an ok experience. There are few hotels in the lanes area of Brighton - so if you can't afford the Hotel du Vin up the road - you could do worse than Leona House.

    • Any tips/secrets for future travellers? — Don't be put off by the exterior. If you don't want to be in the Lanes go for Kemp Town B &B's which are better value

Management Response
Petrona, Owners
(Management representative)
29 Jan 2007
We feel we must respond to the comments made after your stay with us in November.
Firstly, Middle street is far from seedy, creepy and uninviting. It is well lit at nights. It mainly consists of office accommodation, few pubs and restaurants, the Jewish synagogue and the famous Hippodrome. Middle street is not shabby, remember this is a conservation area where most of the buildings are listed and over 200 years old. Many are from the Georgian period.
Leona House is a grade 2 listed building from around 1820 so does not lend itself to having an elevator to reach the third floor room in which you stayed. The bathroom is not large I admit, but certainly not tiny ( there is only so much alteration that can be done to a listed building). You cannot compare us with the Hotel du vin. That is a five star hotel with bigger rooms and bathrooms, the minimum price there is about £170 per night with breakfast. Leona House is a small seven bed room B & B of which the majority of our guests love and enjoy very much. You were charge £50 per room per night single occupancy ( with breakfast ). Your son stayed on the second night free with a complimentary breakfast in the morning. We would say that is value for money. That says it all for our hospitallity.
We give breakfast times of 9 or 10 am at weekends - appropriate we feel as most people come in reasonably late at night, but will always accommodate earlier if requested, especially for guests visiting for conferences and busniess meetings.
If you weren't happy with your stay or if you had any problems, you could have discussed it with us. ( as you said the owner is a sweetie ). We are very sorry if you did not enjoy your stay.
