Stratton House is a lovely old Cotswold building with pleasant gardens set well back from the main road yet easily found. It has the slightly faded appeal of a grand Edwardian country hotel. Someone with a cartload of money could come along and upgrade the place from floor to ceiling but would probably spoil its genteel charm.
Our room, accessed by quirky stairs and undulating corridors, was not exactly in the luxury class but was chintzy and comfortable. The residents' lounge had that slight air of a retirement home, yet none the worse for that given its setting. Two American guests I was chatting to loved it.
We only ate breakfast there, which was excellent; help yourself to cereals, fruit, breads etc, waiter service for a cooked brekky. They were happy to bring a plateful of whatever you wanted from the Full English menu in any reasonable quantity. The waiters were stretched to the limit at one point when a party of travellers descended but did manage to cope. All the staff were polite and agreeable.
Ours was a pleasant and unhurried one-night stay, much preferable to a Premier Inn type stopover at a similar price level. Its AA rating of three stars is about right but I'll give it four for character. We would return.
