Stopped at The Bull for lunch last weekend. Initial impressions were mixed - the decor is olde world charm but a bit tired. Ordered fish and chips and a pot of tea for two. The tea service and cups were straight out of the early eighties, and 6 tea bags in the pot seemed excessive but it came with a pot of hot water which was a nice touch.
The fish and chips though - oh dear! We have never before been served what seemed to be Young's chip shop-style fish "slab" (i.e. reconstituted!) instead of a freshly battered fillet. Straight out of the freezer packet from Iceland, along with the measly handful of soggy chunky chips. For a hotel that is closely associated with fishing on the nearby river, this was surprising and disappointing. Avoid for impromptu weekend lunches!
