We booked two double rooms through 'Secret Escapes' so that we could explore this wonderful part of the country with friends. The hotel is a beautiful building, with tasteful interior decoration and staff keen to welcome you into the hotel and all it has to offer. Our rooms were very pleasant, clean, thoughtfully enhanced by notable toiletries (Molton Brown), bottled water and the offer of fresh milk for room-based tea/coffee making. The television in the adjacent room was very audible and at times intrusive, but given the nationwide interest, understandably, in the Olympics, there was little that could be done to address this.
Our offer included breakfast each morning and dinner on the first night in the Mulberry Restaurant. I had engaged in some enjoyable research to locate our dinner venue for the second night. However, our plans changed when our friends presented at the restaurant at the appointed time (I had telephoned to book our dining time) and one of the party was refused admission because he had not brought acceptable footwear with him. Nowhere on our paperwork had I been advised of any dress code (although the member of staff managing the restaurant asserted that it was always made explicit in all the hotel's information - but conceded it wasn't within the paperwork I had from 'Secret Escapes'). I checked and double checked my paperwork - and there was nothing to suggest his footwear was unacceptable.
It was so emabrrassing - for him, as the inappropriately dressed member of our party, and me as the person who had organised the booking. Despite pleas for some exception to be made as it was clearly a mistake that we were not guilty of, but victims of, there was no yielding by the hotel. The manager was not available and they claimed they would take the matter up with 'Secret Escapes'. We wandered into Moreton to find somewhere to eat that evening and re-booked our dinner for the subsequent evening. Day 2 was spent tracking down a shoe shop so our friend could be properly attired for dinner that evening.
'Secret Escapes' claimed when I contacted them that they were not made aware of any dress code and that my contact with them was the first they heard of it.
So, provided you go suitably attired, I am sure you will enjoy a pleasant dinner in The Mulberry, with attentive service and an impressive cheese-board served by a very knowledgeable chees expert. Breakfast on Day 1 was good. Breakfast on Day 2 was busier, it seems, than staff could manage well. We waited far too long for our order to be taken and the toast we ordered was never delivered - staff tried hard though and were always pleasant.
