Having visited the Cotswolds before on several occasions, my boyfriend & I were after something extra special for a week’s romantic getaway in the area we hadn’t yet explored. We were not disappointed.
After 2 year’s worth of friendly and enthusiastic email tennis (I always seemed to pick dates when Byfield was fully booked!), to the moment we checked out, Jill and Brett were nothing short of helpful. Every question was always answered promptly and informatively and advice offered wherever needed.
We checked in on Sunday 12th February after a beer in the local Inn and were immediately made to feel like house guests rather than paying customers. We sat down in the family kitchen and were given tea and cake whilst chatting and poring over various maps and information about the immediate and surrounding area. Jill and Brett certainly displayed a passionate knowledge for Painswick and it’s history which made us want to explore even more!
We opted to stay in the Garden Room having seen it on their website and after reading all the previous reviews on Trip Advisor, we were confident it would be just lovely.
The room is exceptionally cosy with everything you could possibly need – a ridiculously comfy bed which you don’t ever want to get out of, a TV, a kitchen and French style doors leading out onto a gravelled patio area leading to the garden. Although the room is directly at the front of the building on the road, it is still very quiet as it is not a main road. It’s quaintly decorated with antique paintings and furniture and keeps in theme of the style of the building adding to its cosy feel. The only thing missing is a bath tub but the shower room is decent enough and it’s a small thing to miss when the general accommodation is good.
Nothing was ever too much and each morning we were left a newspaper and croissants from the village bakery on our door mat outside. The room is totally self-sufficient with private access to the outside so you never need go into the main house ensuring privacy at all times. The fridge and cupboards are heaving with goodies for a proper breakfast, snacks and more! Something not every guest house is able to offer.
Byfield House itself is splendid and we were given a tour by Jill and Brett and a couple of occasions. It’s a pretty impressive building by anyone’s standards and steeped in history. The best part is that it’s been furnished in the style it deserves.
Jill, Brett and the doggies make you feel so welcome. The whole holiday was rounded off perfectly by staying at Byfield House and we would definitely recommend this to anyone as well as return to stay ourselves.
