The Albatross Guest House was definitely an eye opener for me. I had never stayed in a B&B before, so I didn't know what to expect, but since the description on the visit portsmouth website states that 'You are guaranteed a friendly welcome and complete privacy in a house which dates back to the 1860's' and that the breakfast would be a 'Freshly cooked, quality breakfast' and that it had three stars, I figured that it would be alright. Totally wrong.
When we arrived we were greeted by an angry looking woman who hurried us inside and to our room. She seemed annoyed by our presence and was definitely not the friendly welcome we had expected. The room itself was also a let down. I had requested a double en-suite bedroom, which I was paying £60 for with breakfast included. The double bed comprised of two singles pressed together, which made sleeping pretty difficult since we both had to stay on our side of the bed or sleep on the uncomfortable crack between the beds. Also, this meant that the duvet didn't quite stretch over both of our bodies. Not only was the bed awful, the en-suite bathroom was, if possible, worse. It was absolutely miniscule, and both my boyfriend and I had difficulty moving around it once the door was closed. It was literally around two feet wide.
However, none of this came close to the horrible breakfast that we had to endure. We woke up in the morning, hungry and expecting a delicious full english breakfast. We did not get this. I am vegetarian, so I was just served with beans, toast, an egg, tinned tomatoes and fried mushrooms, which is perfectly fine. My boyfriend had a sausage and some bacon to add to this. What made this breakfast so nasty was that everything was luke-warm. The eggs were undercooked and felt and looked slimy; the sausage and bacon was cold and the muschrooms were underdone. The only thing that was nice about the meal were the beans. Also, when asked whether I wanted tea or coffee I requested the latter and was served up with a french press coffee maker to serve one person with enough coffee at the bottom to serve three! I can honestly say that was the strongest and most revolting coffee I have ever tasted in my life.
All in all, as you can obviously see, I would not recommend this B&B. We felt as if the owner did not appreciate our custom at all, due to the unfriendly welcome we received, the bad bedroom we were given and the atrocious breakfast that was served to us. We will not be returning.
