“Good fun, a nice break.”

Marwell Hotel

7 Sep 2007

We stayed at the hotel last weekend as an end of holiday last minute treat for the kids and were pleasantly suprised. The rooms are a little shabby and the bathrooms need updating but the beds, towels and linen were excellent for a 3* hotel. The rate for two rooms was far far cheaper than any other hotel I had tried to book that weekend.
The children had a great time in the empty pool and liked the jungly themed restaurant and it was great having a zoo on our doorstep. In the evening we went into Wincester which is a nice city, just a carbon copy of Cambridge really.
All in all a nice end to the long wet school holidays, and we even had sunshine.

Excellent service. Peaceful quiet location. Nice pool, sauna and hot tub which was never to busy. All staff extremely professional and polite. Food in restaurant was delicious although it was quite expensive. Would recommend eating from the bar menu which is good but a bit cheaper. Room was big and finished to a high standard. I loved the way the hotel was set up like a safari lodge. We had booked for only one night but after having seen the room, location and service we booked another 2 nights straight away. I was originally going to book online through a last minute website but decided to phone the hotel as i was worried the booking might not of been processed in time for our arrival. The hotel gave me a better rate than the website so i was extremely happy. The only bad point i could find with the hotel was the £2.50 tray charge for breakfast in bed/room service. Both the continental and cooked breakfasts were excellent.

If you are looking for a peaceful romantic getaway like we were then this hotel is for you.

When we arrived hotel looked in need of modernisation, inside first impressions were better but room was in need of refurbishment and decorating. It was not very clean, crisps on chair from previous occupant. Bathroom particularly bad.
Hotel staff are friendly but service left a lot to be desired.
Restaurant very ordinary, food average.
Hotel website flatters!

I stayed at the Marwell Hotel for 1 night while on business in Winchester.

I found the rooms clean and tidy. The decor was a little dated but the hint of a jungle theme made a pleasent change from the generic hotel room decor I usually come across while travelling.

I didn't get a chance to check out the pool area or the evening menu, but the breakfast was good, and all the staff I came across were efficient and polite.

The only real down side for me was the 5% service charge that the Hotel applies to your bill when checking out. I queried it with the girl on Reception and she explained that it is applied to every bill but could be deducted if I was not happy with the charge being applied. I asked her to remove it, which she did without any hesitation.

Overall it was OK, but the management need to think about that 5% charge as it is a guaranteed way to annoy every customer.
