We really like the Hotel du Vin chain and have stayed in several. In my opinion, Winchester is definitely the most charming of the group.
I have stayed here twice in the last week for work related functions and overall was pleased. The really disappointing thing on the second visit, however, was the unavailability of any tables for dinner in the evening on the day we checked in. Surely, they should ask you when you make the room reservation if you would like dinner knowing that they are likely to be busy or should hold some tables back for residents? Apparently not.
The rooms on both occasions were comfortable (Pommery particularly so- although it does face on to the road). Courvoisier is lovely with a freestanding bath in the room and views over the garden. I would suggest avoiding the rooms on the top floor, if possible, as they tend to be smaller.

Prior to meeting our cruise ship in Southampton, my husband and I stayed one night at the Hotel du Vin in Winchester. The moment we walked into the hotel we were greeted by a very accommodating desk clerk. She took our information, showed us to our room and explained every detail of the hotel, restaurant, and room.

Dinner in the Bistro at the hotel is an experience beyond words. The service is impeccable and the food was exquisite. From start to finish the dinner took 3 hours, not because of slow or poor service, but due to our love of taking our time to savor each course.

The room was quiet and comfortable. For an historic hotel to be able to keep the comfort at such a high level is amazing. Our room looked out towards Winchester Cathedral and the busy street below. But with the double-glazed windows we never heard any traffic noise. There were rooms above us but we slept soundly without a problem.

We hope to return in the future. Highly recommend this hotel & restaurant.

“No more than OK”

I stayed at the hotel for one night, Saturday April 5th. Not a good start, arriving around 17.30 to find one guest unable to check out due to card terminal not working. Receptionist very pleasant and welcoming. Given the Meerlust room which was ok, but suprisingly at that time, shower temperature was tepid.

Waited in very small bar for friends where service was no more than average and very very slow. When the bar filled up an officious staff member asked everyone to move to their tables. Dinner and restaurant service were both good.

The room was GBP 165 without breakfast which in my opinion is a lot for this hotel, e.g. stair and hall carpets were worn and frayed.

I would look elsewhere if returning to Winchester.

Various members of our family booked various parts of a surprise party and overnight stay at Hotel du Vin and we could not have been more impressed. The staff we had most dealings with - Stefan and Holly - are both an absolute credit to the hotel - Stefan even taking group photos for us from half way up the stairs. The meal was absolutely delicious and despite a full restaurant they managed to feed 16 of us together. Rooms, decor and ambience are English country house but with lovely powerful showers and great fluffy towels and bathrobes. Can thoroughly recommend based on our experience.

Excellent hotel right in the middle of town but tucked away so no drunken fights in the street outside. Fantastic staff & rooms and the restaurant is exceptional. We stayed here for an anniversary and were not dissapointed. Could not recommend highly enough.
