My family went down to Winchester for two nights because we found a great deal on a hotel there. While walking down a shopping street on our first day we were greeted by staff from a local oriental restaurant giving out free spring rolls. I must say they were amongst, if not, the best any of us had had. We were given a leaflet and promised we would visit the restaurant.
Two days laterr we did. Tanoshii fusion do not only Chinese but Thai, Indonesian, Japanese and Malaysian. We sat down and were greeted by a friendly waitress who gave us menus. Her English was not terribly good, but she was very nice and polite. Someone who seemed to be in charge was also there, her English was excellent and she was equally friendly and polite.
We looked through the menu, between £4.50 and £6.50 (I think) for a starter and a few pounds more for a main course. We thought this was a bit pricy, but as we flicked to the back of the menu we saw that there was a set menu for lunch, £5.50 for one course, £7.50 for two. The starters included things like Tom Yam Gai soup (chicken, Thai style, usually spicy) and things like fish cakes in Thai broth for main courses. For a £2 surcharge you could have had chopped-up fillet steak in Thai sauce with rice.
We ordered Tom Yam soup (x2), fillet beef in Thai sauce, Thai fish cakes in Tom Yam broth and Thai green curry. The food was great, not at all overpowering or too spicy, gently flavoured, you could taste everything but nothing was too strong. The portions were twice as big as our local where we live in Chelsea (London).
The bill came, it was very reasonable, £37 including everything for all 3 of us for two courses and drinks (including VAT).
On or two people came in to order take-aways in an hour but the restaurant itself was empty, only we were there. It is a shame, because this is a great restaurant, and one you MUST try if you are going to, or live in Winchester, and like Oriental food!
We were told when I pointed out how empty the place was that the woman and her whole family spent hours making spring rolls fresh (400!) for the "Continental" event in that shopping street, everyone said how good they were, but nobody came. She thinks that it is because of their location, and it is hard to spread the word. It had been this empty for three years apparently, I would like to hear if anyone went and saw it packed/full/crowded.
This is a must-visit restaurant, you won't regret it!
Oh, and for dinner, a very nice set menu with 2 courses is £12.50
I am posting this on many review sites as I feel quite sorry for the restaurant because in this recession here is a reasonable restaurant selling great portions of great food, and not a soul was there apart from us
