“Great character and superb food”

This was my third stay at the Wallett's Court and the few pounds extra are worth paying to stay in such historic surroundings, with a tatsefully converted set of old buildings, each room with a different character. This naturally means that each room is different but they are all clean and well equipped. So much better than staying in a monotonous, identical room in any of the multinational business hotels who charge similar rates. The restaurant is superb as can be witnessed from the number of midweek evenings when it is full, even though it is out of town. The guest facilities are good, too - the resistance pool, sauna and steam room are all free to guests and had I a tennis partner with me I would have made use of those courts with the lovely backdrop of open fields. Just one gripe - wireless broadband costs next to nothing to provide, so why do so many hotels demand an extortionate daily rate?

We stayed at the hotel for just one night on 13th April 2008. Having read the reviews we thought we were on to a winner.

Stayed in the Stables and found the room dingy and dull. Bathroom had no curtain or blind at the window which is unfortunate with a ground floor room. The bed was uncomfortable and the bathroom was very basic.

We raised our concerns on checkout and response was there none!

On a good note the breakfast was excellent.

Rather over priced with a starchy atmosphere.

We have fully investigated this review and discovered which room was considered to be 'dingy and dull' with a basic bathroom. It was room 10, a standard ground floor room with bathroom ensuite (the bath incidentally is a free standing roll-top bath). The window in the bathroom does not have a curtain or blind as it is fully frosted. Incidentally if you were to open the window and look out over the 7 acres of landscaped gardens you can see the Goodwin Sands in The English Channel a few miles away. The decor in this room is 'colonial' with darkwood furniture complete with mosquito net! The matress in this room is less than one year old and pocket sprung.
We did have other rooms available on the night in question and if requested we could have offered a tour of the rooms to discover which one best suited the guests needs and taste. As each and every one of our 17 rooms in unique, I am sure we could have found one to suit.

With regards to complaints on check out. As we've stated before, if only we had known how disappointed our guests were when they were with us at Wallett's Court then we really would have done everything in our power to ensure things were put right. We shall endeavour to contact this guest and see if we can put things right.

One more thing. We endeavour not to be 'starchy'. We try our level best to be friendly and encourage an element of informality to the Wallett's Court experience. If you happen to come and stay ask for me and I'll put you in the picture...

“Beautiful hotel”

Wallett's Court Country House

12 Mar 2008

My boyfriend and I went to Walletts Court for a night away in February. We wanted somewhere beautiful and luxurious with a spa and found Walletts Court on laterooms.com. The hotel was FANTASTIC - our room was gorgeous - we had a suite (which was bigger than my whole flat) and the bathroom was to die for. Everywhere was spotless (not just our room but the whole hotel).

We checked in and spent the afternoon in the spa - we were the only 2 people in there which was lovely. The pool was great and not too cold, the jacuzzi was good and the steam room was nice. The whole spa area was spotless.

Later that evening we borrowed a DVD (free of charge) and chilled out in our room watching it on our flatscreen tv!!

Despite being in a converted barn our room was lovely and warm, and we were able to turn the heating up/down as we wanted.

Before we checked out my boyfriend popped to the gym (had all the basics, nice and modern etc) and then we had the full English breakfast in the hotel's conservatory. Delicious! Proper bacon, proper sausages and a good selection of cereals, fruit, juice, tea, coffee etc.

Walletts Court is definitely worth a visit if you are looking for a little bit of luxury and want to relax. We will be returning in the summer to take advantage of the fab outdoor space there (was too cold in Feb!!).

“Lost it !”

Wallett's Court Country House

6 Feb 2008

I've just read the last review and found myself thinking 'Did I write that' - I agreed with every word. We've stayed there for over 10 years and it's totally lost it - despite the promise of the website. The room was ok but everything else was so DISAPPONTING. The food used to be amazing and the service impeccable - this time we had to ask for our canapés, sat where we struggled to get attention and asked if we wanted coffee before we'd been shown the dessert list. The food on the plate didn't redeem either - the steak was very very average and the veg selection, well just boring, underwhelming and not even well cooked. As for the spa facilities, we did try and stay positive but they turned out to dreary, tired and chilly - we huddled under the hand dryer in the ladies changing room to try and keep warm after our swim! Any of the brilliant service that was always there has gone - when we asked about a feedback form, the sharp retort was “have you got a problem?" Well yes, we had loads of gripes and that unsmiling response made them into one big problem. So if you remember the Wallett's Court that had courteous waiters serving stunning, memorable tasting food, my advice is don't book a stay - you'll regret what it does to your memories.

I'd like to share with you a story I recently heard...

A young lady was waiting at an airport for her flight.

She became a little peckish and nipped into a shop and bought a bag of her favourite chocolate chip cookies.

She took the cookies put them in her handbag then found a seat in the airport lounge next to a man reading a newspaper.

After a few minutes she reached down beside her and took a cookie from the bag on the armrest between them, then to her astonishment the man sat next to her also took a cookie from the bag, smiled at her and ate it. She felt irritated but thought it best not to say anything. She then had another cookie and the man also took one. Now she was getting a little annoyed and thought to herself 'Bl**dy cheek, I ought to punch him on the nose!'.

Then she had a third biscuit, he took another from the bag, smiled at her again and munched away without saying a word. This continued for every cookie she had he took one too. Now she was really angry, but still said nothing because she didn't want to make a scene.

Finally there was one cookie left, 'Ah Ha!' she thought 'What's he going to do now?'

Well, he reached into the bag, took out the last remaining cookie, broke it in half and offered half of it to the young lady. That was the last straw. Without saying a word she picked up her handbag and stormed off to board her plane.

Sitting on the plane, still fuming she settled in her seat and looked in her handbag for her reading glasses and book.

There she saw the bag of cookies she had bought earlier, unopened, untouched. She had forgotten she had put her cookies in the handbag.

To her horror she realized that, the man wasn't in the wrong. He had shared his bag of cookies without feeling angry or bitter. He had even shared his last cookie with her without a word of complaint or any signs of annoyance.

All the while she had felt anger towards him and he was in fact the one sharing with her and now she had no opportunity to explain herself or apologise.

I learnt something from this story, there are three things which cannot be recovered.

The stone... After it has been thrown.

The word... After it has been said.

The time.. When it has passed.

Now, If you are the one sat there thinking someone is 'stealing my cookies' and the whole World is against me, take a moment and think, what if I say something right now?

You never know, that cookie-stealing man may be your friend and would be horrified to hear of your upset and may even go a long way to ensuring that you are happy at that moment in time.

So, don't wait until the moment has passed and stew in your own anger and frustration. Let someone know right there, right away if an experience is not coming up to your expectations and see what happens...

In this particular instance if only I had known how disappointed my guests were when they were with us at Wallett's Court then I really would have done everything in my power to ensure things were put right.

We do encourage guest feedback at all times throughout their stay with us; on our registration forms, guest welcome letters, menus and on 'mission statements' posted in the spa and by the front door of the hotel.

Don't get me wrong, feedback after the event is great and helps hotels like us to improve facilities and service. But, sometimes a word or two to the management at the time can make the whole hotel experience so much more rewarding.

Once the words have been said and the 'stone' thrown it sometimes feels impossible to rectify the situation. We can only offer our sincerest apologies and make token gestures for not delivering a product that meets expectations.

So, if you are considering staying at Wallett's Court, I urge you to do one thing - Trust that we really are 'on your side' and will do every thing possible to ensure your time with us is a happy time...

Thanks so much for listening

I booked a Saturday night away to celebrate my partner's birthday. I booked direct and opted to stay in one of the suites. We arrived for check in on Saturday at 1400 hrs and were swiftly checked in and shown to our beautiful suite in one of the converted barns. The room was a good size with a separate sofa, chairs and coffee table. The bathroom was huge with a free standing bath, shower, big fluffy towels and bathrobes. I had booked us both massages for the afternoon. I had a stone therapy massage and my partner had a back, neck and shoulder massage. Whilst both our massages were nice I didn't feel mine was as good as it should have been and my therapist was not particularly quiet moving around the room during and after the massage which was a shame. We spent the rest of our afternoon in the spa making use of the swimming pool, jacuzzi, steam and sauna rooms. This was really nice and very relaxing although the changing rooms were chilly!

We had a drink in the bar after our time in the spa and then went and changed for dinner. We had a lovely meal in the restaurant that evening with the service attentive but not stiffling. The restaurant was full but the service was excellent with just enough time left during courses.

We relaxed after dinner in the bar which was very relaxing and cosy.

Breakfast on Sunday morning was delcious and alot of the produce is sourced locally - best eggs and sausages I've tasted in a long time. We were not rushed out of the restaurant and indeed there were some guests reading their newspapers long after they had finished eating.

We were sad to leave Wallets Court after our leisurely breakfast and if we had wished we could have continued to use the spa for the rest of the day.

I would highly recommend the hotel and hope to visit again some day soon.
