I booked a Mini Spa Break (i.e. 1 night, dinner, bed and breakfast, use of the spa and one treatment each) for a treat for my partner's birthday. We were greeted by a friendly staff member and shown to our twin room. The first problem was that the door would not easily open and we were told that there was "a knack to opening it". Obviously, I did not have the knack as within an hour I had to go to reception to ask for help in getting back into my room. If they knew there was a problem with the lock, why had it not been repaired?
The room was a disappointment as, although it was nicely furnished, it was small and the shower room (no bath) was tiny and quite basic for a "luxury" hotel. The towels were not particularly soft, the toiletries uninspiring, and before the end of our stay a tile had fallen off the wall under the basin. This had obviously happened before as it had blu-tack stuck on the back of it! Again, why had it not been repaired?
More importantly, the beds were rock hard and so uncomfortable that neither of us slept much. And there was only one pillow per bed - what's all that about! Is there a world pillow shortage? Obviously we only discovered this when we went to bed, which is a bit late at night to start complaining and asking for a room change. When I did mention it to the receptionist when I paid the bill the following morning, she barely acknowledged my comment. In other words, I got much the same reaction to my "feedback" as a previous reviewer.
On the plus side, my partner enjoyed his time in the spa and we both enjoyed the treatments. I would also recommend the lounge, dining room, breakfast room and gardens. The hotel is very clean and well-furnished and the staff were friendly and helpful.
The dinner in the restaurant, which I understand is £40 per head, was okay, although not as good as I had been led to believe as I understand it has won awards. My partner had the crab cakes for starters, which he said was more cake than crab. He then opted for the lobster, which did not have a surcharge but also did not suggest on the menu that it was actually only half a lobster. The amount on his plate including the vegetables would just about have filled a saucer. The puddings were delicious as were the little extras with the coffee. I must also say that the breakfast was excellent and served in lovely surroundings by very pleasant staff.
The following morning after I had paid my bill I realised that there was an £11 surcharge added. This I assumed was on the restaurant bill, which amounted to £110 (including drinks), the price of the meal being included in the mini spa break. It was only when I returned home and checked the pages I had printed off their website that I noticed that it stated that "an OPTIONAL 10% will be added to your restaurant bill". If it was optional why was I not told this when I paid the bill?
All in all, and even allowing for the fact that the price included
dinner (with wine), use of the spa and two 30 minute treatments, I think £300 for one night is expensive.
I notice from previous reviews that the people who give good reviews appear to have stayed in Superior rooms, whilst the poor reviews are from stays in Standard rooms. Perhaps a lesson to be learned here, owners of Walletts Court? If you class yourself as a luxury spa hotel then ALL the rooms need to be of a high standard.
Finally, as I had been handed a letter on arrival stating that the hotel's owners/managers welcomed feedback, I wrote to Walletts Court a few days after our return home explaining my disappointment. Three weeks on I am still awaiting a reply. Regardless of the reason for the correspondence, it is only common courtesy to acknowledge receipt of a letter. It does not, therefore, encourage me to recommend Walletts Court to anyone else.
