We stayed in this lovely Inn for one night on a 2 week tour of the UK. Our stay at Wallett's Court was one of the highlights of our trip. Our room was in "the Old Stables" over looking rolling hills and fields, just beautiful. Our meal was very good and the staff were fantastic. Not a cheap overnight, but quality seldom comes cheap. We would stay again if we ever make it to Dover again. Thanks for a great night!

I booked a Mini Spa Break (i.e. 1 night, dinner, bed and breakfast, use of the spa and one treatment each) for a treat for my partner's birthday. We were greeted by a friendly staff member and shown to our twin room. The first problem was that the door would not easily open and we were told that there was "a knack to opening it". Obviously, I did not have the knack as within an hour I had to go to reception to ask for help in getting back into my room. If they knew there was a problem with the lock, why had it not been repaired?

The room was a disappointment as, although it was nicely furnished, it was small and the shower room (no bath) was tiny and quite basic for a "luxury" hotel. The towels were not particularly soft, the toiletries uninspiring, and before the end of our stay a tile had fallen off the wall under the basin. This had obviously happened before as it had blu-tack stuck on the back of it! Again, why had it not been repaired?

More importantly, the beds were rock hard and so uncomfortable that neither of us slept much. And there was only one pillow per bed - what's all that about! Is there a world pillow shortage? Obviously we only discovered this when we went to bed, which is a bit late at night to start complaining and asking for a room change. When I did mention it to the receptionist when I paid the bill the following morning, she barely acknowledged my comment. In other words, I got much the same reaction to my "feedback" as a previous reviewer.

On the plus side, my partner enjoyed his time in the spa and we both enjoyed the treatments. I would also recommend the lounge, dining room, breakfast room and gardens. The hotel is very clean and well-furnished and the staff were friendly and helpful.

The dinner in the restaurant, which I understand is £40 per head, was okay, although not as good as I had been led to believe as I understand it has won awards. My partner had the crab cakes for starters, which he said was more cake than crab. He then opted for the lobster, which did not have a surcharge but also did not suggest on the menu that it was actually only half a lobster. The amount on his plate including the vegetables would just about have filled a saucer. The puddings were delicious as were the little extras with the coffee. I must also say that the breakfast was excellent and served in lovely surroundings by very pleasant staff.

The following morning after I had paid my bill I realised that there was an £11 surcharge added. This I assumed was on the restaurant bill, which amounted to £110 (including drinks), the price of the meal being included in the mini spa break. It was only when I returned home and checked the pages I had printed off their website that I noticed that it stated that "an OPTIONAL 10% will be added to your restaurant bill". If it was optional why was I not told this when I paid the bill?

All in all, and even allowing for the fact that the price included
dinner (with wine), use of the spa and two 30 minute treatments, I think £300 for one night is expensive.

I notice from previous reviews that the people who give good reviews appear to have stayed in Superior rooms, whilst the poor reviews are from stays in Standard rooms. Perhaps a lesson to be learned here, owners of Walletts Court? If you class yourself as a luxury spa hotel then ALL the rooms need to be of a high standard.

Finally, as I had been handed a letter on arrival stating that the hotel's owners/managers welcomed feedback, I wrote to Walletts Court a few days after our return home explaining my disappointment. Three weeks on I am still awaiting a reply. Regardless of the reason for the correspondence, it is only common courtesy to acknowledge receipt of a letter. It does not, therefore, encourage me to recommend Walletts Court to anyone else.

“Not exactly what it says on the tin”

Wallett's Court Country House

23 Jun 2008

Stayed for 2 nights recently above the spa/pool which is housed separate to the main hotel. Spacious suite (shower a strange shape and you can end up with a crick in your neck if you're tall) but road noise was off-putting. I did ask the receptionist to be moved but there wasn't another decent sized room available for the 2 nights, so we decided to stay put.
The main house including the bar and restaurant ( food delicious!) areas were what you expect for a property of that age (beautiful) and we wished that we had booked a four poster room which we discovered were in the main building.
The last morning of our stay (which happened to be a family wedding) was not up to standard as paying guests were having to chase up their breakfasts after having to wait longer than necessary, due to one waitress having to cope with two breakfast rooms split between the wedding party and us!
She later approached us when we were checking out and apologised but I think that should have been down to management.

The hotel's website needs to reveal a bit more information regarding the rooms so people can make a more informed decision.
Overall a pleasant stay.

We stayed here with our two children aged 10 and 13 for one night before crossing to France. I have travelled to France every year for the last 11 years from the North of England and can honestly say this was the best experience yet! We arrived at the hotel in time for us all to take a lovely swim and relax in the spa before having our evening meal in the bar. The staff were friendly and courteous and the room was perfect. We even had a back door and a little table and chairs to sit out and enjoy the peace of the lovely surroundings. I would recommend it to anyone and for families wanting an overnight stop with a bit of luxury it was great and with breakfast included pretty good value for money. Finally my daughter left a much loved (yet very shabby) dressing gown at the hotel. When we rang them they very kindly put it safely to one side and we collected it when we returned to England the following week. Please note only 10 minutes from port so worked out fantastically.

This was my third stay at the Wallett's Court and the few pounds extra are worth paying to stay in such historic surroundings, with a tatsefully converted set of old buildings, each room with a different character. This naturally means that each room is different but they are all clean and well equipped. So much better than staying in a monotonous, identical room in any of the multinational business hotels who charge similar rates. The restaurant is superb as can be witnessed from the number of midweek evenings when it is full, even though it is out of town. The guest facilities are good, too - the resistance pool, sauna and steam room are all free to guests and had I a tennis partner with me I would have made use of those courts with the lovely backdrop of open fields. Just one gripe - wireless broadband costs next to nothing to provide, so why do so many hotels demand an extortionate daily rate?
