Having spent just one night at Bethany House, we wished we had been able to stay longer. On arrival, we were warmly greeted by Corrina and Martin, who immediately produced a tray of fresh tea and biscuits (no charge added to the bill) before offering to carry our bag to our room. These days, few so-called five-star hotels offer this service.
And what a friendly, welcoming couple are Corrina and Martin! How many hosts will take the time at breakfast (of more later) to share their recipe for kedgeree with an afficionado?
The Balcony Room is a lovely size and very comfortable. Its bathroom is across a small landing but the provision of soft, fluffy bathrobes avoids any potential embarrasssment if other guests are encountered - but we didn't meet anyone. A peaceful night's rest in this quiet room was very much appreciated, on comfortable beds that were far removed from the hard surfaces many hotels provide (presumably with longevity rather than their guests' comfort in mind.)
Breakfast was an even nicer experience. Fresh fruit salad, newly-baked croissants and Martin's fruit compote (we bought 2 jars to take home) were a delight, as were the full English breakfast and kedgeree. Particularly appreciated were the dishes of home-made jams and fresh butter in a dish, not in plastic packets. Again, 5* hotels take note!
The attention to detail of all aspects of Bethany House was probably what impressed us most, complemented by the warmth of our hosts.
On reflection, we could not fault our stay and look forward to a return visit when we are next in the Tunbridge Wells area - we would travel a long way to repeat this experience.
