My wife and I stayed for one night on 6th May 2007 in a superior room 404, in an annexe at the rear. This room was exceptional. Power shower, jacuzzi bath. Plasma T.V.Only niggle for myself was the exceptionally thick continental quilt which kept me too hot in bed trying to sleep. This is not a complaint, just a personal thing. All staff are very friendly, in all areas of the hotel. The breakfast was 1st rate and the food and service at Dinner was great. Loved the Pool and would definately return here.

“Not value for money.”

Best Western Ambleside Salutation Hotel

Stayed at this centrally located hotel for 5 nights in April 2007. We asked for a non smoking room and were given one of only 3 rooms on the first floor which were non smoking. Two of these rooms are extremely small and unfortunately we had one of them! The room was small and very noisy as there was a two inch gap under the door leading from our bedroom to the hallway. Chambermaids shouted outside
our room every morning about 7.30, to majke sure we were all up for breakfast and not too relaxed. Reception staff were very young and not very service oriented.

Breakfasts were good, but there was a very loud and over powering head waiter who seemed to patronisingly shout to the guests rather than talk.

The leisure centre is very good and underused, so we had the pool to ourselves.

On the whole I would not recommend this hotel. It is not value for money. We paid £118 per night. This is more than I pay for a 4 star when I stay in London!!

I am sorry that GeoDevon did not feel the hotel was value for money but I feel I must respond to some of the comments made.

We actually have 10 non smoking rooms available on the first floor of the hotel, not 3 as mentioned in this review. Because this hotel dates back to the 17th century there are various different sizes of room. However, I do not consider that the room this reviewer stayed in could be described as “extremely small”.

The Room Attendants do not go up to start servicing guest rooms until 9am as they are busy cleaning the Public areas downstairs prior to that. The hotel was busy with Easter holidays, so I can only assume that the shouting, which was heard on the corridor, was from other guests staying in the hotel.

I do not think my reception staff could be classed as very young as they range in age from 20 to 34 with most being over the age of 25. We regularly receive compliments on the friendly & efficient service, which guests receive whilst staying with us. Please see the previous 3 or 4 entries concerning my staff.

The rate paid for the 5 nights averaged £110 per room night including breakfast which I do not feel is overpriced considering the facilities that the hotel has to offer, including the lovely new leisure centre which the reviewer mentions.

“Wonderful 2 night break”

Best Western Ambleside Salutation Hotel

We stayed for 2 nights mid week (21st - 23rd March) and were very impressed with the Salutation. We had a standard double room which was very clean and had a lovely bathroom with power shower & jaccussi bath. Breakfast was great - as much as you want, good choice and top quality. Staff were very polite & helpful. My watch slid down the back of the dressing table which we thought was fixed to the wall. The staff had retreived it within 15 minutes of me telling them. We ate out both evenings & can highly recommend Stampers, a small intimate restaurant, serving high quality food. The hotel has a lovely spa with a beautiful swimming pool. A great place to stay.

We stayed at the Saluation this week. Whilst the hotel itself is really nice the bedroom was a bit of a laugh. The room was quite small and sloped in different places. Although there was meant to be satellite TV we only had National Geographic and Paramount Comedy, but on the other hand you don't visit the Lake District to watch TV!! The pillows were very thin and I used the spare one and asked for a third one. The matress also sloped rather but that rather kept in with the theme of the room!!

I used the spa bath for a few seconds!! It seemed to fire everywhere so I switched it off quickly ! This was not the hotel's fault, rather mine because I've never used one before!!

The breakfasts were really good.

Maybe if we stayed there again I would go for a family room or a superior room or a room that didn't slope!!
