This hotel enjoys a good location with far reaching viewsover the lake. Lovely clean rooms upstairs but the good news ends there.

Unfortunately, the owners seem more concerned about attracting trade from the ferry travellers than in running the hotel side of the business. The garden leading down to the lake is spoilt by large umbrellas and signs for daytime visitors and the ''restaurant'' serves only informal meals such as pizzas etc. The food was disappointing and expensive. There are no separate areas for hotel residents who have to queue up to order food and drinks.
Breakfast was OK but no fresh products and all butters, jams etc were packaged. There was a limited choice of fruit juices, cereals etc.

There seems to be no proper management of the hotel and we were disappointed with our stay, especially considering the price of the rooms.

“Loved Every Minute of Our Stay”

We have just spent 3 nights at the wateredge inn at waterhead ambleside and loved every second, minute, hour of it. We went for my girfriends 30th birthday and have to say the hotel was fantastic so happy we booked here ,the room we booked was a spacious en suite ( room 27 ) had a view of the lake and was very clean and comfy, the towels and beds were changed every day and the staff always had a smile on their faces no matter what time of the day it was. The food at the hotel is also very very good especially the ulswater trout . The bar area in the hotel is a great place to unwind and the open log fires and leather couches are just what you need after a days walking. The hotel is in a great position sat right on the lake and with a great beer garden which looks out onto the lake and mountains, it is also only a 5 minute walk into the centre of ambleside( go to the unicorn pub it does a good steak and ale pie and good beer). We loved the hotel so much that we are returning in september for 3 nights in the same room. Oh and you also get free passes to the health club at the low wood hotel. stay here and you will not be dissapointed.

“Good place for dogs!”

We have just returned from a two night stay at the hotel with my parents and their small dog. The rooms were very nice, especially the larger room which my mum and dad had to give them a bit more room for the dog. This particular room had excellent views over the garden and lake and a larger bed and separate seating area. The hotel is excellently situated on the lake shore with ample parking. Breakfast was excellent with local cumberland sausage. For evening meals, the pub offers a varied menu and large portions. The bar also serves excellent beer locally brewed Bluebird bitter and a large selection of continental lagers. One tip, if you do have an evening meal, sit at the bottom of the pub as the official dining area is a bit canteen like. This area definately needs some refurbishment and detracts from the overall ambience of the hotel. The staff were very friendly and dogs are welcome (they are allowed in the pub so can sit with you whilst you eat), the waitress even brought a dish of water for the dog. The hotel offered good value for moeny especially for the lake district which can be very overpriced. For a nice evening meal, go across the road to the Regent (but come back for the Bluebird bitter as they don't serve draught beer over there!).

We have stayed in Ambleside many times and had meals and drinks at this hotel. We decided we would like to stay there for an Autumn midweek break.
We stayed in what they called a 'spacious room' and it was, with a partial lake view, nicely decorated. The bed was very comfortable and the room was cosy (the weather was rather cold). The bathroom and wc were on opposite sides of the entrance just inside the room which was fine. The bathroom was not large but adequate, the shower, however was, when set at the correct temprature was so forceful it was impossible to take a shower without soaking the bathroom (no shower curtain). The hook for the showerhead was just above the bath taps, not ideal! The breakfasts were excellent, plenty of choice, the scrambled egg and smoked salmon was lovely. Very attentive staff who were always eager to please. Evening meals were excellent with plenty of specials on offer. Quite a different menu than we had in the summer. Live music in the bar twice a week (Tues and Thurs), we were there for the Thursday night and it was a fun night and not too loud. We would certainly stay here again.

We paid £140 a night for 2 B&B for an upmarket room. This is in the annexe and comes with its own little garden or balcony. You can just about see the lake over the outbuildings. Room is big - hasa nice seating area and big bed. Fittings area bit dated - avocado bath and manky curtains in bathroom. Also being on a busy road the 2 small windows could have been double glazed as they didnt keep the noise out.
Food was good but and heres a big but- ona busy Saturday the garden was packed and we had to Queue 20 mins to order. No account was taken of residents- whilst there were residents only areas there was no residents ordering area. The queue for food was the queue for the bar and many people voted with their feet.

The garden is nice but could do with a load more chairs.

The previous correspondent mentions lack of management - the place is run (it seems) by charming foreign students. Charming but no nouse - couldnyt open the window to the dining room on a sweltering night(didnt havea key!)

Similarly breakfast was OK -served 8-9-30 and at 9-15 I hada full english that had clearly been under a warming rack for 30 minutes - shrivelled mushrooms - oh and on Sunday no fruit/grapefruit . A request met with a shrug and 'we have none today'. No self respecting hotel runs out of tinned grapefruit - the receptionist blamed a crash in Windermere that morning for the lack of fruit - also no newspapers!!!!

Reading this over I sound very picky but at £140 a night I think I have reason to be. I'd excuse a £50 guest house these things but not a £140 a night hotel. Next time we'll stay at the salutation - no lake view but much better standards.

Its these little things we remember.
