My friend & I decided a post-xmas long weekend away (3 nights)was in order and the place we normally stay in Ambleside was booked up - we needed a twin room.
After looking through the internet we found the details for Smallwood House and as it was in a central location and offered a twin room at reasonable rates, decided to chance booking this.
How lucky we were! We had a fabulous room up at the top of the house, with great views (however stairs were very steep so be careful if you have limited mobility) and the owners couldn't have been nicer. There was the added advantage of being able to use free guest passes (with a £20 deposit each) for the Low Wood Leisure Club (5 mins drive away) which was handy as the weather wasn't brilliant!
It also has a very handy little car park at the back (little being the operative word!) & you have to leave your keys with the owners just in case they needed to move cars around (which some people may not like)
The breakfasts were good "traditional english" (although personally I would have preferred more choice in the yogurt / fruit selection) and the bathrooms had all been refurbished (with great underfloor heating!)
The location was fantastic - very central and we would recommend the Apple Pie cafe for carrot cake & coffee and (as always) both Ambles (more traditional) & the Glass House (bit more pricey but amazing fresh menus) for a fabulous evening meal.
I would definately stay at Smallwood again.
